As others have previously stated, bags are not necessities. IMO, one should not sacrifice their quality of life over them. It is more satisfying to live in a comfortable home, to drive a reliable car, and to be able to go on trips and eat out regularly than to carry a luxury bag. Also, taking care of your health (and not overwork yourself to compensate for one grand purchase) is important. I pay for all my bags in cash - and my decision is usually dependent on how much disposable income I have at the time of purchase. I usually set aside a budget yearly that I can frivolously spend on whatever I desire, part of it I spend on clothes, another part on jewelry or bags, etc. I'm pretty conservative, so I stick to that budget and never go a cent over.
My advice to someone who is saving up for a big purchase like a Chanel, is to not rush it. You will appreciate the experience more when it is stress-free and aren't worried over the financial side of things.
