Leon Mege and quality of your diamond

I haven't worked with Leon Personally however I asked a few vendors including Leon about reseting my engagement ring stone which is a 2.39 I SI1, and I sent him pictures of the diamond and the specs and he said he would set it for me. However his price was much higher than all the other quotes I got, about double. Also he only uses high quality melee (VS/F-G ideal cut melee) and I was nervous that the melee would be brighter than my diamond. When I received the quote it was the same price if you used white gold or platinum. He was very nice and professional. I still have not come to decision on setting my diamond.

I honestly do think Leon does the nicest work I have seen a few of his pieces on pricescope.

i wonder why the price for platinum and white gold were the same? my setting cost $1.7k for platinum which was $700 more than if it was in white gold ... maybe he just prefers platinum and figures if he quotes them at the same price most people would choose platinum? :shrugs:

Right now it's probably because Platinum is SOOOO cheap.

what size was it?

Thanks for sharing your experience. Do you mind sharing the specs of your diamond?

wow - really? I think thats kinda rude ... but then again, i find flaws in diamonds really beautiful ... thats what makes them diamonds.

I have a .86ct stone. It's by no means tiny and it's by no means a piece of crap. I love this stone because of that indented natural, they are incredibly rare and very uncommon in this kind of location. He gave me a little bit of a complex for a while but I got over it. He's a diva and it's his loss.

^I'm sorry that things did not work out for you and Leon. Stories about him being an "artiste" have been around for a while. If I'm not mistaken, I think he only works with platinum, right?

I know Platinum was his specialty, but I thought I'd seen some gold rings--yellow and rose though--never white to my remembrance. I know he does the stacking rings in other golds.

I still lurk on PS a lot so I see that his attitude has not changed a whole lot. That's fine. He's in demand, he can choose who he wants to work with. I have a nice setting from somewhere else, so it's all good.

mj - no I haven't . . . but it's been almsot a year and I haven't done anything w/ my ring yet! LOL! I'd LOVE one of his lower profile setting w/ claws:girlsigh:

Hi ame, thanks for your response.

Amanda, you know I always take your advice... I'm thinking maybe of putting the cost of the setting into the stone itself (as you once mentioned you'd probably do, I think) and just wearing a solitaire until an anniversary upgrade or something... eep!

Hiya! I requested a quote for a 1.5 ct f vs1 asscher, and he was happy to oblige. He did say a halo might complement the stone better, but when I told him I always loved his solitaires - low basket/profile, thin shank, beautiful claw prongs he said that would suit my stone wonderfully as well. I went on to say that I know he usually works with larger stones etc, but he actually said my stone was a fine size, and he's worked with smaller as well. Your stone sounds lovely 2-3 cts?

honestly, i'd concentrate on the stone (getting the best and biggest for the $$$)...put it in a decent platinum solitaire setting

there is so much to do when you are engaged/getting married, that you might want to make it a project for your 1st anniversary...or even later, to celebrate a milestone

getting a diamond is so exciting in itself, maybe finding the perfect setting could come later?

sorry, just an old lady's perspective!

(oh i just read your last post...sounds like you are going in that direction)

Always, always, ALWAYS put your money into the stone if you can! Fashions and trends come and go, and it's far easier/less costly to change a setting than to upgrade a stone. If you get "shrinkage" in future years, there's always the option of adding sidestones or a halo, hehe.

By the way, 2-3 carats at your very young age makes you quite a fortunate lady with a very nice boyfriend! Just figure out your personal limits for color/clarity and try to get the best cut that you can! You go, girl! :smile1:

^^^^^
Thanks for your advice, Kristy! My boyfriend *is* a nice guy... I'm going to try to find the right balance between quality and size. Two of my closest girlfriends went completely opposite ways when it came to their diamonds... one girlfriend got a pretty much flawless 0.9 carat stone, and the other friend got a very low quality 2.5 carat stone... so I'll have to figure out something in between those two extremes.

You're right about the setting... Leon Mege or somebody like him will always be there to set a stone later on.

i just check out some reviews (experiences ... not reviews of the work he does) on PS and wow ... he has made some women cry ... i dont think anyone should be crying when it comes to a diamond ring.
