Per Swanky's request, I'm starting a new thread rather than continuing in another...

Does anyone know if Leon Mege is picky about the quality of diamonds he works with? He doesn't only want to work with near-flawless stones, does he?

I personally am looking for a stone that is clean and clear to the eye, not technically flawless. I've pretty much made up my mind to have a setting done by LM, but I am concerned that my diamond wouldn't be nice enough for him to set. I'm aiming for around 2-3 carats in size, with quality yet to be determined but it won't be flawless or even close.

No, I think he'd accept a range of quality. I know some women have had H-I-J stones at SI1 clarity set by him. As long as the cut is great/looks good I think he'd accept it.

He set my H SI1 stone. :smile1: He is not snobby about his client's stones at all. As long as it's not a frozen ball of snot off *bay, I think you're fine. My advice would be to go for the best cut you can get for your budget!

Annie, GREAT plan. Leon is a true artist and I think you'll really appreciate his work.
I prefer him to the cookie molds of the big design houses personally.

I do know that he rejected my diamond because it was not of "his standards". He did actually say that. I asked for a 6 prong classic "leon solitaire" and he told me he was afraid that it would be "swallowed" by such a thing. He claimed that the size and clarity were of particular concern especially in my choice of 6 prongs, and that the clarity "worried him" as mine is an SI2 with an indented natural at the girdle and I wanted the stone set so that the natural was next to a prong and not under. When I wouldn't budge on hiding the "flaw" he told me he didn't feel Id be a good match for his services.

I've read recent threads that he's been snotty about certain diamond suppliers and refuses to work with stones that came from them.

Oh well. Maybe if I ever get a larger stone for an anniversary he'll be an option again but it doesn't seem like he's hurting for business.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Do you mind sharing the specs of your diamond?

wow - really? I think thats kinda rude ... but then again, i find flaws in diamonds really beautiful ... thats what makes them diamonds.

I haven't worked with Leon Personally however I asked a few vendors including Leon about reseting my engagement ring stone which is a 2.39 I SI1, and I sent him pictures of the diamond and the specs and he said he would set it for me. However his price was much higher than all the other quotes I got, about double. Also he only uses high quality melee (VS/F-G ideal cut melee) and I was nervous that the melee would be brighter than my diamond. When I received the quote it was the same price if you used white gold or platinum. He was very nice and professional. I still have not come to decision on setting my diamond.

I honestly do think Leon does the nicest work I have seen a few of his pieces on pricescope.

My engagement ring was set by Leon. Although Leon is a bit opinionated and tempermental (like many artists), he wasn't snobby at all about my 1.6 carat inherited diamond. It is an old diamond with good clarity but "warm" color (L). He actually said he loves working with old cuts.
