Key Pendants? In or Out?

I think they may have peaked in terms of Tiffany etc coming out with new designs, but it's a classic symbol.
I personally love the larger keys on a long (32-34") chain.

I don't think they will ever go out. I don't have a tiffany key, but I have a large old fashioned looking silver one with black diamonds that I got as a Christmas gift from a local jewellery store. I absolutely love it 3 years later so for me I think I would always wear them. Before Tiffany and other jewellery stores started coming out with the keys I was actually hunting at garage sales and junk stores for a real old fashioned key to turn into a necklace LOL! My dad had one that was an original to our house and an old door but it was misplaced and I had said I wanted it as a teenager to wear on a chain.

At the risk of being shunned, I'll buck the trend and say they are out.

If you like the key symbolism, get one and make yourself happy. But I wouldn't buy them because the trend will definitely fade.

I have the rose gold diamond crown key and I still wear it a lot after 3 years. I don't think they are a trend at all as not many people have it where I am (big European city). Not sure about the trend in the U.S. though.

No one ever wants to believe that anything they invested in was a "trend", but key pendants are no longer being aggressively marketed and promoted, so technically they were a trend that has now faded. That doesn't make them any less beautiful or any less wearable, and I think anyone who loves them should still invest in one. Trends come and go, and that's true for almost ANY piece of jewelry (except the most simple of diamond studs, solitaire rings or perhaps pearl strands).

Well said.

For me, the key doesn't have much personal significance and I'd be happy wearing any larger pretty pendent. So if I do buy one, chances are I saw too many ads. :p

It looks lovely on others and I enjoy reading some of the stories associated with it. Among some of my friends, a key pendent signifies coming of age and given by their parents, or their new home.

I'm not a fan of the larger keys (on me) but I have a RG vintage oval diamond key and chain and I love it! it's the smallest size they make so maybe 3/4 of an inch long? sparkles like crazy and imo delicate enough where it doesn't look too trendy.

I have this one:

That's lovely Candice! Would you have a mod pic by any chance?

I have the large Fleur De Lis key, and I absolutely adore it. I wanted one for SO long. Originally I had my heart set on the crown key, but I stupidly encouraged my best friend's boyfriend (now husband) to buy it for one of her birthdays, and didn't want to match her. The Fleur De Lis came out a bit later, I think, but I feel an attachment to it because I was born in New Orleans, and the fleur de lis has a special meaning there, especially after Hurricane Katrina. But over the winter, I've been wearing my smaller pieces (SS DTBY, bean) a lot more, as they are easier to layer peeking out from scarves. I hope the key comes back into rotation this summer when I want to show a bit more skin.

Personally, I do think that the key motif is a classic, though perhaps not to the level of bean -- more like the open heart. I like that the large keys make a statement with their size, but don't look gaudy as they're still so simple and elegant.

If I could do it again, I might get an even simpler medium-sized key, like the SS vintage oval, and wear it on the same chain as the small RG key. I've seen that on this forum and love how it looks.

GREAT thoughts from everyone! I think I am going to try the dbty as I don't have one and sometimes just want a little something but not much more.

Thank you all!

I think that's a great idea! Although whenever I try on the dbty pendants I always want the stone to be bigger. I can't help it, I'm gaudy hehe. I also like the tiny diamond metro pendants for a little bit of bling. Keep us updated!

That what I'm worried about! I'm all about the bling!! Thought it might be nice tho for those times when I may want to layer or when I need something subtle. Will try to go next week...after the Mother's Day rush. Def going to look at the other one you mentioned too! Thanks!!

I kind of feel this way, too. But, If it's a motif you truly love, it will always look right and work for you.
