Kate Spade Kate Spade Cuts Back on Sales to Be More Exclusive

I feel like that's sort of doing a disfavor to the crowd that love Kate Spade for its design and affordability during sales, it feels like having been given the middle finger.

Honestly, it's like it gives people on the lower economic ladder less chances to own something they like...while not obviously discriminatory, it kind of makes me a bit mad and sad about this.
What if they just made a club where members get exclusive offers? Where the membership is not too high of a price. I don't know.

The article only mentions "40% off your purchase" type sales. I have never seen such a discount online or at a boutique so I assume this is an outlet sale promotion. I see far more outlet line purses in public than boutique purses so this seems like an effort to boost boutique purchases. And I cant be disappointed in that strategy.

It doesnt even say there wont be that type of deep discount sale. Just that they wont happen as often.

I'm the type of person that will stalk a bag in store or online for months before buying it. This allows me to end up with bags I truly love and work with my style instead of ones that just catch my eye or excite because of a supposed great deal.

I havent ever had the opportunity to shop at an outlet but I have had the impression that many of their lines are overpriced and that the huge markdowns are what bring the purses into comparable prices with boutique sales.

It's not hard to get a KS purse for $110 to $150 on sale thru their website. Compared to the other brands on this site, that is a very reasonable price.

This is a shame! I live for the Surprise Sales! I wonder if they will scale back on the Outlets as well. I do feel that everyone has a Kate Spade now, but its really about the lifestyle more than the brand. It says something about a woman that I don't identify with Coach or MK.

I have a few Coach bags, all but two are boutique, but they are more classic than anything. I love Kate Spade for the feminine, funky, live-loud, stand-out style. I'm willing to pay full price for bags I really must have so I am not too upset about this cutback. The problem is that they were heading in the same direction as Coach, but especially Michael Kors. When everyone and their mothers has a particular brand then the brand is no longer a luxury, which alienates those who would buy bags at full price under different circumstances. There are some boutique MK bags I like, yet I don't buy them because I see at least 20 MK bags every single day, and most are outlet. That kind of mass dissemination of a product does not appeal to me.

You don't see brands like Chanel, Manolo Blahnik, Christian Louboutin, etc. having sales every other week, or making merchandise directly for factory. You can't even buy most Chanel non-cosmetic items online! There is a certain level of exclusivity that is part of the appeal. MK, and to a very large extent Coach, just don't have that and that is not the way I'd like to see KS go.

Now, that doesn't mean I don't love a sale as much as the next girl, I do, and I usually wait until a bag goes on sale to buy it, but only because I know it will most likely go on sale. Why spend $400 now when next week the same bag will be $200? I am not alone in that way of thinking, obviously, and it doesn't do KS as a business any favors. The bottom line is that they are not, and shouldn't be, interested in making sure those who can't afford the bag full price have a way of getting them. It is a business, after all, and their main concern is making a profit.

It sucks, and I'm certainly going to cut down on my KS purchases because I can't afford as many bags if I have to pay full price, but that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

First world problems!

Yeah *sigh*

Where I live, my whole state or province does not have a KS or outlet (Haha, you can probably narrow down to a few places where I currently may reside in). The closest is maybe finding a KS item at Winners or Marshalls.

I think a part of me will always respect a brand that attempts to make their bag accessible to all while be in good quality. I know its not a main company goal or anything, but I don't know , it's just kind of nice to have something like that and find another way to be exclusive than cutting back sales.

In my personal opinion, it's why I will always intend to own non-designer labels as well.

That's interesting! By exclusivity, so you mean having limited edition bags or tiered system like MK has? I think Saturday was there attempt to be affordable and accessible, but I am not a fan bc it's not KS. It is like H&M's version of KS.

Perhaps maybe like a Costco membership model? Like if you are a big purchaser, you can buy their membership for let's say, 120 dollars a year, and it will give you access to specially designed purses or or super awesome blue-moon rare discounts... something like that. It's a good way to separate from those who like Kate Spade that intend to own a few of the their products which they find affordable versus those who LOVE kate spade and are rich enough to afford them....

But I'm just trying a vague idea - this thing would sound like a headache for the company to deal with.

It's the psychology of scarcity and being rare. I'd much rather subscribe to a company that sells a common brand where everyone has one but they are good quality.... I don't really like Micheal Kors designs but I like Coach designs and I'm quite glad they are affordable.

Having said that, I don't really buy anything at regular price except for food and quality things required for living and provide safety.
Personal opinion, but I know the company owes consumers nothing when there is no business transcaction.

I suppose the 40% off sale means strictly the surprise sale that they used to have every so often. I can't image they are going to stop putting things in their sales section unless they reduce their inventory.

I put a few things on my cart and never managed to check out. And today I received an email from them that they are offering 15% off my entire purchase. I don't know if it will work for everyone but worth trying if you have something you want to buy.

They've done that for me twice.

That is a shame. coach did that and their sales have plummeted. The KS outlet is different than Coach. KS had some great 25% off everything including sale prices. IMO I feel that is the price most of their bags are worth. I love my KS bags but would never in a million years pay full price. Feel they are headed down a slippery slope
