My mom gave me her emerald cut diamond. It’s a k color diamond. I had it reset into a ring white gold ring with diamond side stones which are whiter in color. In some lighting the stone looks pretty white, but other lighting the yellow color really stands out to me and bothers me. I think the contrast of the k color to the white gold and whiter side stones make the yellow of the diamond more noticeable. I was considering resetting it into a yellow gold setting with no side stones. Do you think the yellow hue of a k color diamond would be more or less noticeable set in yellow gold vs white gold?

Yes - setting the diamond in yellow gold w/o side stones would've been my instinct. I think the yellow gold will contrast with the K-colored diamond and make it appear whiter.

Or, if you want to keep the side stones, maybe swap in yellow diamonds or sapphires? That would also make the center stone appear whiter.

Thank you! I hadn’t thought of yellow side stones but that idea has me intrigued.

I would set the stone in rose gold. Rose gold softens every single color.
I’ve been thinking about rose gold too! I love rose gold and have other rose gold pieces (earrings, necklaces and bracelets) that would look nice with a diamond rose gold ring, but my favorite metal is yellow gold.

I like this idea, I also think maybe chrysoberyl, quartz, citrine or apatite could be a nice choice for yellow side stones. There are so many yellow gemstones to choose from! There’s a gorgeous stone called diaspore which changes from yellow to a warm peach or orange colour under fluorescent(?) light.
OP, my personal opinion is that as i*bella said you need something warmer on either side of your diamond if you keep it in WG. K coloured stones can be beautiful, but they do need warmer settings and/or warm coloured accent stones to offset the colour when set in a white metal. I also love the idea of having it reset in YG.

Thanks so much! I will look up what some of these stones look like.

I was going to say the same thing. I have seen K stones in WG and plat and they look beautiful. But if you are going to have side stones they would need to be Ks or Js or even beautiful L. Definitely not much higher in color. EC stones are one of my all time favorite stones. They don’t mask clarity or color very well but in the right setting that EC will shine all on its own. GL enjoy the stone!

Thank you. Maybe it is mainly the whiter side stones that bring out the yellow as opposed to the metal...

I would look at Ring Concierge IG page for inspiration pics. She has beautiful stones in YG. I love all metals but since EC don’t mask tint (or you could be color sensitive-everyone interprets color differently), your ring could be a high K meaning almost J or low K meaning almost L ...perhaps look into a 2mm yellow gold solitaire. That would look lovely. Or rose gold. You can also do a platinum head instead of yellow gold if you like. Just an idea.

Oh my! I just checked that IG page and there are such gorgeous ring! Thanks for the tip!

It’s a great site for inspiration.

OP, can you share a better pic? One not so close up and blurry. The stone looks gorgeous!

Also, Pricescope is a wealth of information if you are going to reset. I suggest a plain band -less expensive-until you find something you truly love.

Sorry I was trying to just show just the stone next to the different metal colors. Here are further away pics. It’s a really clean stone. EA341B16-FEE1-4C19-BFED-9DC5A9158262.jpeg5FB89027-6497-4E6D-80A6-708E2E1CDA22.jpeg
