I am reviving an old thread for two reasons.
One being that I found interesting info on Aldo Cipullo’s motivation for creating the Nail bracelet .( Vivianne Beckers book Cipullo: Making Jewelry Modern).
The second reason being -I’m wondering if attitudes towards Christian symbolism and the JUC have changed over the past decade.
For myself,I attach layers of meaning to my JUC. It symbolizes my “need” to keep parts of my life attached/connected as I spend time in two very different locations .
I also regard the JUC to symbolize (as its creator did,)a reflection of LOVE and Christ’s sacrifice .
Another layer of meaning for me is its edgy industrial non conformist vibe.
Any one else care to share their thoughts on wearing the JUC?

Obviously, any nail symbolism has connections to Christianity, Christ and his sacrifice. It is all over art, literature etc, especially anything coming out of France and or Italy.
Denying the connection simply is displaying a lack of culture and historical knowledge, beyond any religious education. I mean, there are "true Cross" nail reliques all over the place that people venerate... Talk about never stepping inside a Museum!

However, since we live in such a decadent and ignorant world, I much prefer wearing clear religious symbolism that I did not buy at an extortionate price...

Cartier themselves seem to have chosen to blur the genesis of the JUC, I guess in the name of sales; given the reactions earlier in the thread, lots of people would never have bought the piece had they known the connection. Really confirms Christ's saying: "You cannot serve God and Mammon".

Also, plenty of traditional nail themed religious jewelry out there; no need to drop the Cartier big $$. Any independent/local Italian jewelry can order them for you from catalog; there are Italian manufacturers who specialize in 18k religious jewelry, plenty of nail symbolism in there... No need to feed the renegade machine...

Edit: can't wait to see all the JUCs being unloaded out of disgust for the icky religious connection!

Reactions: Jeanne Aldo
If you look up the history of the JUC, Aldo Ciupullo the designer loved finding art and beauty in everyday things, hence his idea of bending a nail around and making it in precious metal to make something utilitarian into a work of beauty and art. You can take that for whatever you want it to mean to you personally - that’s what art is all about! So if your coworker sees one thing and you see something else, it’s all good.
