Just walked in .... There it was!! Stories of finding Birkins off the shelf

I've been hurling for a few days coz of this thread.

How about a thread on dressed for success and still have the H SA refuse to make eye contact when she says we have nothing. Or the shiek who has every SA traipsing after him. I'd bet the number of break your heart stories could out number the Harry Potter books. Am off to suck a Midol.

(((Hugs))))

Jmen..I totally get you. Yes I have been turned down several times. Once, out with hubby nd daughter in stroller visiting my parents home town. Asking for B even after buying something the SA said we only get birkins in on order and when I countered saying that every store surely gets stock in and throwing in various Hermes info (- did my research here) she just said outright NO. Then when asking to place an order she looked me up head to toe, then my hubby then even my little daughter head to toe sitting in her stroller before accepting the order. I have been waiting almost two years now. My first birkin I got through a very dear friend..
Oh yes and the year after even dressed up to the nines and after doing some purchasing (which I wanted anyways though) we were still declined. Haiyaaaa. Not giving up though..hehehehe.

Ladies...I live 2 hours away from my nearest store and think I would faint if this happened. I gave up walking into the stores a few years ago when I was in London (which wasn't often), always to be told that I'd never get one unless I was on the waiting list which only opened twice a year and they never knew when. I have recently been informed that the waiting list is no more and reading this thread gives me hope. I thought the only way I'd get my 'bucket' bag is on Ebay but was so scared of spending thousands on a fake that I've never been brave enough to take the plunge. I am off to Cannes in 2 weeks for 2 days, so please cross your fingers for me. If any of you can give me any advice or ideas I would be eternally grateful x

Try Monte Carlo. They have a very nice boutique there.

I think that sometimes the planets and stars are in alignment, and a person can get lucky, however, that luck is usually just good for one one or possibly two forays on a whirlwind around the globe visit to boutiques. It is all about timing. If I hadn't had such a wonderful long lunch in NYC recently with one of our dear members, I could have had a 35cm etoupe Kelly. I missed it by two hours. That's life.

Thanks for that...I'll see if hubby will take a trip to Monte Carlo on the way back to Nice airport. After reading some more posts on here do you have any tips on how to dress. Should I get the Choo's or Loub's out and dress to impress?? Also should I take another designer bag in or would that be looked down on that I dare use another designer?????? Again tips most welcome.

I'm very sorry! Can you switch SA's or stores or plan some trips that you would love to go on and visit H stores at the same time? HUGS

There is one in Nice too. I wouldn't run around in heels as this is a resort like area. Just look nice and put together. Elegant always works even with sportswear. Wear a Chanel. This is France so they always like that. MC is quite a bit past the Nice airport so I doubt he will pop for that. You never know.

Just remembered something. My SIL just came back from Cannes and she went to the boutique there and they gave her a hard time re the VAT because she didn't have her passport with her. She got so mad, she stormed out and as luck would have it found the exact scarf that she was looking at in Cannes at the Duty Free at the airport and for less money! I believe it was Astrologie Nouvelle that she purchased.

good luck MrsProc!!!!!! sending positive H vibes your way!!!! :hugs:

my advice is to be yourself, be enthusiastic, and treat the SAs with kindness. don't dress in heels if this is not what you usually do (you'll appear uncomfortable and trying too hard, but if you love heels, then go for it!), and simple and classic is always good. if you have other H items, try to wear it, scarf, jewelry, etc.

something i've done has been to ask to see the leather swatch book... that gets the SAs and me talking about leather, which naturally goes on to bags. you can show you've done your research by talking about the different leathers, colors, etc... the time i did this, the SA in the end asked "so what bag are you looking for?" and did not balk and give me attitude when i brought up a Birkin. i am not saying this is a guaranteed move, but i think it makes them realize you are not just a casual H customer and you have true appreciation for the brand.

i think this is totally true... when the stars are in alignment...

Such nice stories! How about those who want to try the Birkin at the store but not buy it yet (the ones who need to save first or those going the reseller route but want to research first)? I could imagine the SAs being difficult already to those who want to buy, what more to those who just want to study, feel, canvass and eventually save up for it? Especially those who will be first time Birkin owners who want to see first if the bag works for them.

Is this even remotely possible? I'm saving for one but it's like a car-level investment for me, I kind of need to feel it first, sleep on it, and decide after. But the scary stories on how the SAs treat first time buyers scare me :O The SAs here are very nice when I ask about twillies and bracelets (which are all unavailable) but I haven't tried asking for "the bag."

I'm that person, and well lets just say the SAs were MAD when I said '...Well I will think about it...' and their faces were like *this is a Birkin here, Sir WTF are you doing?!?!?!?* I really personally don't really get how H SAs are snobby because that one occasion where I did actually touched, held, stroked (OK, OK i think you get the point ;) ) Birkin, it was a Porous Croc one too, and well I looked less than presentable, a Polo shirt, Shorts and a pair of Vans with holes all over them!! And I only carried my Zippy with me, I guess its just the person you are dealing with at the time, and well I striked lucky as the H SA I was dealing with was really helpful!!

Also saving for my first Kelly!! Hoping to get it some time soon!! Gris T, Etoupe or Black Togo/Clemence with either GHW or PHW, in either sizes 35 or 40 both Rectourne... Pretty simple requirements right?? :graucho: I don't live close to a H store (closest one is on the other side of the country in Sydney)...

I think that you have a better chance at finding a bag on the shelf if you go to a new store when they open for the day. I have seen bags on the shelf of a certain store when it was new. Now, not really. (not that they aren't in the back :graucho:)

I, too, live 2 hrs away from the nearest H and have purchased plenty of stuff from wallets, scarves, ties, and my beloved lil kelly (back in 09 when she was sitting on the shelf waiting for my eyeballs to find her). Gone are the good old days!

I went through the motions of doing the wish list 2 years ago and didn't limit myself to just one color but a ranked order of top faves. Nothing in 2 years.

I'm a balloon filled and ready to float among the celestial bodies but Hermes is holding the balloon and decides not to tie a knot. The air escapes and there is that schizoid flight following in short order by a crash landing. That's how I feel. (It would almost be better to shoot me and put me out of misery. At least an act of kindness -- no more suffering dejection.)

As far as circumnavigating the globe with the hope of having a lucky day -- that is humor most noir if you knew my luck or lack thereof. I don't have that luxury of time and my ailing back -- I can just see how things unfolds. I make it to Paris after a grueling flight trying to stave off back pain only to be told sorry, we have no kelly. A primal scream emits from the core of my being, and am promptly dragged off to a padded room (cell).

I'm too saving for my first bag but I don't want to ask in the boutique in case I get offered one but can't afford it and have to leave it! I know it's unlikely but I'd be waiting years for another.:-s

Thanks for your advice. Will start polishing my Chanel tonight!!! Wish me luck.....
