I'm sorry to hear about your bracelet. As for shortening, as a jeweler, soldered connections are actually harder and sturdier than unsoldered casted metal, if it's done properly. I also think the clasp got caught on something.
But don't give up. It may turn up somewhere at your home or in the car. Keep searching. Try to think when was the last time you saw it on your hand, then try to search in every area you've been since. I found a ring once 1.5 years after I lost it, it was in a pocket of my jeans. On another occasion, my husband found my ring on the street, it slipped off my finger because it was cold, we went meticulously the same route in the neighborhood and he spotted it under the tree.
