Joseph Lau is auctioning off some of his collection?

Very good points ; I think also the Sotheby's and Christie's names tend to add a level of validity in many people's minds. Like oh they're auctioning off these items, they must be ok/legit/no grey areas.
But it's important to do due diligence.

So long as they are not stolen property and/or he isn't fronting for someone else, the new ownership would be above board.

He's not known for being nice. It was his first wife Teresa (or rather, her father) that helped him with getting the real estate empire started. It's the age old story of building success with the help with first wife. Guy gets tremendously rich and starts to keep Miss Hong Kong's/pseudo celebrities as mistresses and girlfriends. Michelle Reis was the most famous of them - she was vicious. Teresa knew what her husband was up to but the rule was don't bring it home but Michelle Reis would call Teresa and taunt her - it was an open secret. That's why people called Karma when Michelle Reis was sick last year. Also why Joseph Lau did not have the best relationship with his son by Teresa, he was very close to his mom before she passed. Anyway I digress....

This article mentioned he has bought "MORE THAN 1500 HERMES BAGS".....not SLGs or clothing/shoes/even furniture...but bags alone. I mean, is that even possible? Doesn't that defeat the whole point of rarity and exclusivity even when taking into consideration buying from resellers....

Buying 1500 bags is definitely possible if one has no budget. I think in general we underestimate how many bags Hermes actually produce and sell. There are over 300 stores globally that must sell 1000s of bags each per year, so I would think 1500 is possible with the necessary funds and good relationships within the stores and higher.

1500 is totally within the realm of believability. He's been buying it for like a decade+ now. And price is not an issue for him. Some may even be "gifts" / bribes. When you get to a level with $millions+ are being exchanged for contracts and kickbacks, a B/K bag is nothing more than a bargaining chip / common accessory.
