Jewelers in NYC

you know what i recommend? i recommend going down to the diamond district in the heart of nyc. there, you will not see the typical posh jewelry stores like everywhere else in manhattan, but they are owned and operated by orthodox jews who have been in their family for generations. believe me, it's the BEST you will find in manhattan without paying high end brick & mortar prices. they have been doing this for generations, so they know what they're doing. no 20-something untrained sales associates there. that's my suggestion! they're everywhere, so you'll be walking up and down the street and you'll see them.

and believe me, you can bargain with them, too.

my mom bought her beautiful 3 cctw pear e-ring there back in the 70s and saved a fortune. that pear ring is now mine! :graucho:

that's where she went to buy all of her jewelry.

good luck and have fun!

Thank you all! onecreativegirl I was actually thinking of that! I guess I will go looking.

oh, i am so glad you haven't left for your trip yet. i just got back from being out of the country for two weeks and when i read your post, i was surprised that nobody else had recommended it. if you're in nyc, the diamond district would be the first place i would go. you can go to a regular ole' jewelry store anywhere in the world, but when you're in nyc, definitely the diamont district.

good luck and if you buy anything when you're there, be sure to post pics.

I agree with onegirlcreative! I think you'll find most of the stores in the diamond district epecially the ones that are inside the building on the corner of 47th & 5th (I think that's the address) have been in business for years & years. My DH bought the stone for my engagement ring from a regular family jewelers in our state (CT) had a setting made at another jeweler then got smart and went to the diamond district for my eternity band. We found a jeweler in the diamond district to make my eternity band to match the color & clarity of my engagement ring, they did a gorgeous job!! Their store has a bunch of reviews on Pricescope too. The customer service was out of this world! I've never had any issues with it and I'm rough on my rings lol. It's channel set, E color, VS clarity, 3.15 carat tw, I think my DH paid $4,500. The appraisal they sent with it at the time was $7800 and that was in 2003 when we got married. In hindsight had we gone there in the first place I think we could've gotten more bang for the buck in my engagement ring lol. If we're ever at a point to be able to upgrade my engagement ring it'll be off to the diamond district we go!!

To go along with onegirlcreative, you can also try Manny Winick & Sons in the Diamond District. Very friendly and very patient if you want something custom-designed.
