Jeweler doesn't recommend martini setting...

I have 4.97 TCW studs. Started out in a 4 prong basket setting...I felt they drooped. Had them switched to a 4 prong martini setting with elephant backs...perfect! I also think they sparkle more, not as much metal.

I have two sets of diamond studs. Each one weighs .42 ct. I wear them at the same time, because I have double piercings in each ear. I switched from 4 pronged baskets to three prong martini settings. I'm very pleased with the outcome. A minimum amount of metal shows and all that you see is sparkle from your ear. I recommend them.

To add some input...the store I shop no longer carries basket set diamond earrings. ( I felt ancient) They also do not carry any total weight diamond earrings larger that 2.0 carats. They are a higher end jewelry store and apparently once you get to this size earring the buying power for this quality level is just not there (at this price point).

She told me once you go over the two carat size it then becomes a larger cost differential and they begin to see customers that want to set the stones in basket settings. She stated the basket setting is still the most secure for the larger stones. She also stated you can have the post made to accommodate the larger elephant back to keep the earring from drooping. It all comes down to what you love.

That's true, the post of my larger studs are longer than my smaller ones. I can't sleep in them at all, they poke into me.

I didn't like how martinis looked on ME. I do like them on other people. If it is what you want, you should go to another jeweller. no way are 1.2 ctws too small for any style you want--that is a substantial earring. My Mom has 1.3's (not martini) and I love the look.
Try another jeweller.
But do try on a pair first to make sure martini's suit you; they don't suit everybody.
