@etoile de mer, yes, this made me sad as well. I studied Schlumberger 16 stone history and design evolved over the years quite a bit.
For example, here is a pic of a really estate ring with sapphires and emeralds. Note the shape of the crosses and how they are wrapped around the band. It's a striking beauty although I never came across to it in real life unfortunately.

And yes, all of them have that solid, heavy look and feel.
I am not sure about the diamond quality but I would not be surprised. I asked SA why there's such a difference and he had trouble answering. Tried to tell me a story about more comfortable wear but I hardly believe it.
Anyway, I am very much inclined towards older pieces. Unfortunately, this is the path which many jewellery houses are taking. Very disappointing - do these few grams of gold/platinum make such a huge difference for them? Probably yes, since the weight difference is very very noticeable when you hold both rings next to each other.
