Thinking of buying my e-ring setting and band from Jared, went in today and found a perfect set. I have read mixed reviews online and I'm hoping to get some help from tpf members. Have you ever bought jewelry from them? What was your experience? Would you recommend them?

I think it is trremendously lower on the "scale" compared to Tiffany as far as quality, customer service, and protection. Is there a jeweler in your area somewhat in the middle of these two? I would not purchase from Jared but that is just me. Perhaps some others will chime in. Good luck and I'm sure you will have a beautiful e-ring very soon!

They're a big chain retailer, but my experience just browsing there when we were looking to upgrade is that they carry a lot of low quality stones and they use a non-dependable certification called IGI. So if it says the stones are F color VS2, they're probably more like I color SI1-SI2. Which means you are paying for quality that you are not getting.

I have never looked at settings. . . is it a non-brand, like an in-house made? I'd feel better by buying brands from them I think.

Is it branded by someone like Tacori or is it their brand? I would not rank the quality of the workmanship or diamonds like I would anyone else. It's a chain "maul" store so I am not really keen on it. You overpay for what you get.

^^^Agree, Agree, Agree!!!!! I would strongly recommend checking out any local, reputable, independtly (having a brain-fart and cant remember how to spell!!-sorry) owned jewelry store and see what they have. I guarantee you if you brought a picture of the set you found at Jared's that you like, they'll most likely be able to get the same/very similar but better quality, and that goes especially for a loose stone too. Best of luck!

Haven't you already got your stone, Trustlove? Aren't you just looking for a setting now?

Besides trying a good local jeweler who comes RECOMMENDED by someone you know to buy a setting from, you can look at some of the jewellers online. There are jewelers you can mail the stone to (insured, etc. who do beautiful work) and there are also jewelers that you can buy a setting from and have a local jeweler then set it. I'd go to Pricescope.com for information on who does what--they are great for that kind of information and the jewelers the experts recommend there will be good.

But ask people you know who set their stone and if they were satisfied--I'd go that route first.

Beg your pardon if I am mistaken and you don't have your stone yet, but I thought I saw a post where you said you did.

I don't care for Jared. I went in once and they offered to "inspect" my rings for free while I was shopping. The next thing I knew, they were trying to charge me all kinds of money to refurbish & repair my rings/settings. They seem shady to me.

Thanks for all the info everyone. Looks like the search for my setting and band continues. All but one of my friends are single, my friend who is already married got her ring from her grandmother. Everyone else I know has been married for a couple decades now, so I'm kind of starting from scratch trying to find a trusted jeweler, who sells settings and bands. I know Tiffany and Cartier don't set your own diamond in their settings. Anyone have any suggestions on where to go.

Black Jade- Your correct we already have the diamond picked out from a private family jeweler who only sells loose diamonds. just waiting to find the setting before we go pick it up.

Yes, but have none of your friends, married or otherwise, had custom jewelry made for them other than wedding jewelry? A jeweler who is good does other things besides setting engagement rings.

If you don't want to go to Pricescope, (where they will send you to jewelers that you have to mail your jewelry to), perhaps you can look up jewelers in your area and then search online to see reviews of their work--if you google you can find sites where people review their experiences with various businesses.

And even if someone has been married twenty years, the jeweler who set their stone might still be in business. From what it sounded like, your mother has gorgeous jewelry--who maintains her pieces?

On P'scope they always mention Leon Mege. He is expensive but from what I remember, you had a pretty amazing stone and a very good budget--maybe he would be the one for you?

With the quality that your stone sounded like and the price you paid and the high end jewelers you were first exploring, I just don't think Jared is going to be up to your standards. You ended up with the right stone for you and I am sending up a little prayer right now that you will also find a setting that will make you very, very happy. It's out there somewhere!

Don't go to Jared. They sold my soon to be husband a fashion ring and said it was an engagement ring. What kind of engagement ring has diamonds in the shape of a flower and curves so that your wedding band can't go with it. Duh!!!

trustlove - I'm surprised to hear that you are looking at chain jewelry stores to set an almost 3 carat stone. It is such an extreme and dramatic turn around from the Tiffany legacy and other settings you were initially considering. I'm delighted with my Hearts on Fire setting and it is similar to what you have been looking at. Perhaps you can do a Hearts on Fire locator in your area and will also come up with some "finer" jewelry stores. Hope that helps!

It just occurred to me--the jeweler who sold your loose stone had no suggestions as to who might be a good person to set it?

I'd start from there too. They probably might even be able to get you settings in for you even.

If not, I'd go to local places, talk to them, see what they have and what they can do for you. It is a big purchase and worth the research, if you don't want to pick out something online.
