I've decided on a Tiffany's E-ring! (to replace mine) - but need advice!

Id go higher color, honestly. I actually spent my day at Tiffany's as well, trying to figure out what I wanted for my replacement ering, and I tried on a 1.14ct H VS2 for $11,000. It was shockingly large to me, having come from a .86ct. I tried on a larger one, 1.45 H VS1 and it was ridiculous on my hand and I don't even recall the cost. It was at least $19K though. I looked at so many I can't even remember pricing.

I would go size. Right now I'm wearing my Tiffany ring, which is an H/IF, 0.71 ct. (bought it second hand or I would not have chosen to pay a premium for IF) in the ribbon setting. The stone is so gorgeous and looks very white. I think that the only way you'd know it wasn't a higher color grade would be if you held it against a higher graded stone. If you went down to an I, you'd probably still only notice the color if you compared it to something else. Unless you plan to do that a lot (and even if you get a diamond wedding band you can get one in the same color grade), I think you'd notice size more on a day to day basis, so I would place more importance on size. Hope that made sense, LOL.

Hey there! We're searching together then - fun!
I know what you mean - coming from a .79 diamond this is SO much fun!! The 1.39 is really about as big as I'd feel comfortable going (or paying) - update below! Let me know what you decide on too!!

Thanks for all your responses... which are interestingly pretty divided too! Half of you say size, half colour! LOL.

So I went back today and had such a nice appointment, got some more options to think about and had all my questions answered - I have to say I'm going to feel like I really chose well by the end of this process!

First I just wanted to see the difference between colours - she brought out a 1.4 size in a D and one in an I and I had to REALLY stare at them to finally see which one the I was. I held them against white paper and it was really by looking at them sideways that I could see the slight cast on the I - so not a big deal. So that made me feel a lot better! Really nice to get a relative look at what the colour difference is over all six gradings... it's not much. But it's definitely visible. (oh and my eternity band is F/G colour so I'd like to stay relatively close to it)

But then I tried a few more on in the middle of the pack colour-wise (G/H's) and found that if I go down to VS2 I can go bigger (the one in a G I saw last time was a VVSI and from what I've learned and read, I think on a TIffany's stone I'm quite comfortable going to their lowest clarity level - VS2 - to sacrifice for size and colour.)

SO... I've had her put a ring on hold for me while she sources some others: a 1.26/G/VS2 for $16,400. It's SO pretty!!! I'm VERY happy with the G colour... I feel like I'd NEVER be able to tell the difference between say an E/F and G and that's good enough for me! Size isn't the absolute most important thing but I wouldn't mind a TEENY bit bigger, so she's going to look for something in a G/VS2 for me around 1.3 - 1.4. I'd be thrilled with the one on hold though so am so glad I went back! Am still thinking of the 1.39 one but now I think I'd rather go for colour, stay in the G/H range and see what I can get. YAY! Will update you all as I go! Cross your fingers for a 1.35 G that I can afford! :)

Jen

Hi Jen, I'm so excited for you. I have a Tiffany classic prong ring and I love it. Its a purchase that I've never regretted and its just such a beautiful, classic ring. I would go down to an H, but not lower. Personally I can see a little color in an I when compared to a G or H - but G or H is really white to me. Don't worry at all about clarity, you won't see anything in your new ring! Anyways, welcome to the club!!!

I was going to tell you to go to a VS2 if you could as well. AWESOME!!!! YAY!

It sounds like you are making good progress. I don't think I'll be much help, because I'd advise to drop clarity to VS2 (isn't that as low as Tiffany goes?) and take a lower color (I prefer the look of warmer colors, I and up), unless the smaller stone in a higher color faces up the same as the larger stone for a lower price.

Yes VS2 is as low as Tiffany's goes clarity wise... D-I colour wise... and apparently all their diamonds are "excellent" cut. :) Totally agree I'm favoring colour over clarity!

I totally agree with you. Don't go below G because I can tell a difference between G and I with my naked eyes!

Another thing to think about is the "presence" from Tiffany. Are the diamonds that you have been looking at have 3 EX? Not all the diamonds I looked at had 3 EX...

What's 3 EX? All I know is that all the diamonds there are "excellent" cuts... can you elaborate please? Thanks!

ps I am in agreement too now and have narrowed the search to a G colour. I might look at an H but am focusing on G... :)

Hi Surfergirljen! Your ring shopping sounds exciting!

I think what musicscrip may be referring to by 3 EX is the cut, polish, and symmetry (please correct me if I am wrong!). Tiffany will tell you what the stats are on those 3 factors if you ask. Obviously cut is the most important is should be excellent, which I believe all of Tiffany's diamonds are rated. The polish and the symmetry may not be, but I don't think it is a big deal. My fiance purchased my engagement ring from Tiffany's 6 months ago but we looked together. I had a ton of rings brought in and all of them (these were round brilliants and modified brilliant cushions (Novo)) had excellent cuts, and excellent - very good symmetry/polish. They were all fabulous! :smile1: My ring is triple ex but I couldn't visually tell the difference between mine and the ones that weren't.

As for color, my stone is an H and it faces up very very white and is a great value! I think it may be a high H/low G. We were originally set on a G and no lower as both my fiance and I could see a tint in the I color. When we were told the difference in price between my ring and a G-colored ring with the same specs, the G was almost 10K more! I could absolutely not tell the difference between the H I have and a D stone that was on display, let alone between the G and the H. My ring is a VS1 but I would have gladly gone down to a VS2 if there were any available in the system with the same specs. Besides, my SO was tired of the multiple trips to Tiffany's so we went with the one I loved :D

Good luck with the hunt, Sufergirljen! It's such a blast trying on all the pretty rings!

Yes! You are right :yahoo:Tiffany names those 3 as "presence" on the certificate. I think all Tiffany diamonds are EX for the cut but not for the other 2.

When did you purchase your engagement ring? Did it come with a leather folder...mine didn't :(

My ring was purchased about 6 months ago. No, unfortunately we did not get a leather folder. My SA said Tiffany stopped giving the leather folders a while ago. We also did not get the GIA certificate (only got their in-house stats) even though the stone is well over 1 ct. I haven't had the energy to hound Tiffany in NY to send it to us. :hrmm:

Sorry for the threadjack, Jen!

Haha - no, I'm enjoying reading it all! Thanks for that info! I've had her search for H rings too just to see what I can get in my price range - thanks so much for letting me know that - that even though you seem to be colour sensitive you loved the H too - great to know!
Thanks !!!

^^^If it is a GIA stone, the G will be virtually distinguishable from the H....maybe the other poster could tell the difference because it was an EGL graded stone???

I have seen some EGL stones IRL that are FAR from what they claim. One was supposed to be a "G" but was more like a "K"......clearly had a yellow tint.

GIA stones, no way could you discern the difference.......even a GIA master gemologist would have to test it against a master set, not just look at it with the naked eye.

Go for an H......much more bang for your buck and it will be GORGEOUS!
