I wear mine in NYC, my DD lives there and wants one. Just like any city, be careful and pay attention!
I have worn my watches/jewelry in NYC and have never had an issue. Just use the same reasonable caution and common sense you might in any big city.
I also think it depends on the model - I used to not worry about wearing my Rolexes when I worked and lived in NYC but since the pandemic I won’t wear my Daytona or GMT in the city. I saw a documentary on how watch thieves target people and i would rather not have to deal with the stress. It just depends on what your risk tolerance is.
I kind of feel like it depends on the area you're in. Idk if it's just me but I feel more comfortable wearing luxury when I'm around the Madison Ave/bergdoff/Columbus circle area.
I’ll be around Tiffany’s and all the other luxury shopping. The only thing that gives me pause, is that we’ll be riding the subway some.

I have the same concerns in London, and I would suggest getting a wristband to cover up your wrist if you're heading to an area that you don't feel comfortable showing the watch, including public transport, and you're not wearing long sleeves.
