The "but it's a Piaget" argument doesn't hold water imho, because accepting a gift you don't like or won't use much is wasting the gesture. When you gift an item to someone you know and meet often, it's nice to see them wear it or use it. I would rather be gifted a swatch that I would wear than an old Piaget I wouldn't wear much. I say this and my everyday watch is a Cartier Ballon Bleu.

It’s gorgeous. But it doesn’t sound like you love it. But since it’s a gift from mil I think I’d accept kindly and say thank you. Unless she’s asking you if you’d like it you could politely decline and say it’s too fancy and wouldn’t get use out of it or something like that. Otherwise, gifts are to be accepted with a thank you as it’s the thought that counts.

Thanks for your thoughts on this everyone! If I did ever wear it, it would only be for more formal events. My MIL only ever wore it on formal occasions and we both have Rolexes as our “every day” watch.

And she wouldn’t be offended if I told her it wasn’t my style — I just don’t want to regret turning something down that I might have actually used from time to time. On the other hand, I don’t want to accept it if I’ll never wear it.

I really appreciate your opinions — thank you!

Fabulous for evening especially if you don’t have an alternative to Rolex for dressy evening events. Rolex does not work for dressy cocktails and neither works for formal...never wear a watch for formal events...can’t help it, from the East Coast. I don't wear white after Labor Day either!
At all?? I’m not American, so always wondered about this. No T Shirts or white runners (sneakers)....anything?
