Definitely no. In my culture giving a watch to a lover means counting your hours to the end.

It's kind of a new trend.I've never heard of an engagement watch. I did try to buy DH his second Hublot when we got married and he freaked out thinking about me spending that on him and he bought it before I could! lol
Think it is not a trend but common practice for the past at least 75 years, either for an engagement or a wedding gift depending on your market or your culture. Where I live, on engagement the man receives a watch, purchased by either the financée or her family, and the woman a ring. For the wedding, the couple exchange watches, often matching or at least by the same maker if a watch hasn’t already been given as an engagement gift.
