Is light color caviar bag really is that high maintenance?

It's very difficult to capture on camera. Also, in artificial light, it is not very noticeable. In daylight though it is very obvious. I did contact the SA that I bought the bag from (NYC and not my home store/current SA) and was basically told 'sorry to hear' and then she never replied again. My current SA is great and we will send it in to see what can be done.

While the white dots (popped caviar mounds) can be dyed and 'fixed', new ones are still appearing. So, my concern is that they'll fix the popped ones, but new ones will appear constantly. Plus, I don't think anything can be done about the yellowing.

The discoloration shows best on the picture with the CC. The piece that holds the CC is not discolored, but the leather of the flap itself is - it's very noticeable in that picture. On the back, the pocket piece is not discolored, but the leather of the bag around it, is. The picture of front with the flap open, you see a bit of discoloration on the bottom, but the part that was hidden/protected by the flap, is not as much discolored. it is very obvious in daylight, but doesn't capture well on camera.

Since different pieces of the leather (CC tab vs. main body vs. back pocket) are either discolored or not, to me is a sign that there is something wrong with the application of the 'color or protectant'. If it was from the elements (though it continues yellowing while sitting in the dark on a shelf), it would be all parts, not just the main part, with the pocket and tap not being affected (IMO). The leather in the strap has greatly discolored and is now darker than the body.

I'm heartbroken over this as I love this bag so much and I feel like I cannot use it anymore, unless I go out at night in a dimly lit restaurant  in which case, I wouldn't bring a jumbo.

Edited to add that I am being super carful with my bags and they do not get tossed around. They sit on my passenger seat then hand on my shoulder until they are back in the passenger seat. The bag otherwise has no wear and tear.

Sorry to say this looks really bad. White dots shouts not happen and yes discoloration is very noticeable. I think they will send your bag to Paris. I personally would push for replacement. Maybe get store credit and buy another bag. They do not have the same grey this year, but they made other bags.
Now you made me worried. I will check mine tomorrow and post pictures. Mine is also 20 c grey medium but I bought from London in nov 2019 and have not used it even once.

keep us posted. I got mine in December 2019 in NYC. I will try for a replacement but am not sure if that is done after one year.

I actually just saw in thar ‚defect thread‘ that there are other bags with the dots. So, clearly an issue with that leather.

fingers crossed for your bag.

Oh wow! I totally see it! So sorry this happened to you. I had the medium 20c grey and just recently sold it but luckily it didn’t have this issue. I have the iridescent blue/green large card holder from a few years back and I could see it turning yellow-ish! This is crazy, Chanel!

They are not difficult to keep clean at all! Just take care where you put them. Color transfer on the other hand is a serious problem! I never carry my light bags with any dark clothes whatsoever..

I’m so sorry to see what has happened to your lovely bag. I hope Chanel can fix it for you. I had a similar thing happen to my black caviar Boy. It started to turn metallic, like a brownish/bronze colour. I was so upset about it and eventually sold it.

Wow, it’s really sad to see that this can happen. I bought a medium 20C in November 2019 because I loved the color and didn’t have much chance to inspect it till I got home… I saw what looked like the beginning of some caviar grains peeling in three different areas even though the SA had pulled out a brand new one for me. Even though the damage wasn’t super obvious, it didn’t sit right with me and so I didn’t even want to take it out of the box to look at it for 2-3 weeks at which point I went back and returned it. By the time I went back it was already almost peak Christmas shopping season so the SA was very busy and we didn’t talk at all, she just made her displeasure felt and processed the refund. They had no more 20C greys left so replacement was not an option. I have been conflicted and had regrets for almost two years now… I’ve been wondering if I should have kept it, but I was so uneasy about the peeling I didn’t even take pictures at the time and can’t ”look back”. Anyway, I am very interested to hear how they dealt with your issue and if they were able to offer you a replacement from the 21A or 21B collections which both had a slightly different shade of grey caviar classics?

I have a grey caviar leather jumbo from 20C. It’s only a year old and rarely wore it (COVID). It sits on a shelf in my closet in the dark and sun in general is not an issue here in Seattle. Soon after I got it, it started yellowing. At first I thought it was all in my head, but over time (even while not using), it’s acquired a thorough yellow tinge. The contrast is noticeable between the bottom part and flap, a clear demarcation line when the flap is up. It’s terrible. In addition to the yellowing, the leather is peeling (popping). The little tops of the caviar mounds are popping off, leaving the raw leather underneath. It looks bad.

I wonder if the yellowing is caused by it being stored for too long?

My personal experience, my white caviar bag started to yellow. Also, the corners would rub and get dirty. Although I could clean it off for the most part, it left the corners looking more worn, in my opinion. In the end, I didn't reach for it much because I couldn't use it carefree. I always had to be concerned what jeans I was wearing and where I was putting my bag down.
