I'm constantly evaluating my jewelry collection. Some pieces I don't think I'll ever sell because they are family pieces like my grandmother's wedding ring or they're just my favorites. But I have other pieces in my collection that I'm not as attached to and when the time comes (either I get bored with them, or my taste changes, or whatever), I won't hesitate to sell and replace them with something else. I actually sold two yellow gold pieces in the last week because I'm looking to use the money towards a timeless (staple) piece like a pair of diamond earrings (which I don't have).
I wouldn't feel bad in the least with selling off your silver and replacing them with gold. If you are going to wear them more (in gold), then to me, that's a no brainer.
