Is it possible for something to be TOO trendy?

This is called 'Tan Van Syndrome' You never notice tan vans until you buy one, and then start to notice all the tan vans on the road!

My wife wears two Loves. One for about 5 years and other for 2 years. We also live in the LA area. We do from time to time see others out there, but not often. When we do see them, she'll go up to the person and compare notes with them. We've gotten some really great stories, like the couple we met one evening that both had matching bracelets, exchanged 22 years before at their wedding. Neither his or hers had ever been off.

Shortee, I say get it - it's a classic and seeing them around town just underscores that. Given the price, you aren't going to see them on every middle school girl like heart charm bracelets.

Where are you in the LA area that you see so many Love's??

Bob

Wow thanks everyone for your input! It's been very helpful for me. My husband offered to get one for me, and he didn't really see what was so "cool" about it. I had to show him photos from this forum from all you lovely ladies who were wearing one and modeled it, in order for him to appreciate how lovely it is once it's worn.

I think this example is similar to what I went through when I purchased my previous car.. I bought a Mazda 3, and then I started to notice it everywhere I go! Then we got an Acura, I started noticing that too! So I think a big part of it is that my eyes are now opened and there is a certain "filter" or "lens" that I am seeing out of.

I definitely have more of a "classically" styled jewelry wardrobe, as I try to buy pieces that will be versatile in the long run and that I can pass down to my two beautiful daughters eventually. I like the idea of having a classic elegant gold bangle in my growing jewelry collection.... I'll most likely go for the purchase in the future (should my husband remember that I still want it!). Besides, my favorite purse brand is Balenciaga and I see a TON more of these than Cartier LOVE bracelets any day of the week, and I still LOVE my B-bags :)

Thanks for your help all! And I hope I didn't offend anyone when I mentioned that I noticed there were more halos in the last 5 years or so. That's just my experience with halos, and I only started getting into jewelry recently... I wish I got into it sooner, before all the price increases!!!

I don't think love bracelets are trendy. I live in orange county too and never see them. I've had my WG for six years and just got my RG one last summer. I wear both daily. I actually see more women wear these when I visits NYC or Las Vegas.

Hi Bob! I never heard of the term "tan van syndrome" but it totally makes sense. I love how your wife shares stories with people who have the same bracelet.

I live in Irvine right now, and that's where I have been seeing them. I enjoy asian food and eat out a lot, so I've been seeing the bracelets at asian restaurants and also at South Coast Plaza.

Congrats on your 2 bracelets!! :)

Have you considered having a bracelet custom made? With the same symbolism as the love bracelet but something that is one of a kind and more unique? I went that route, not because I saw love bracelets everywhere (I've actually never seen one in real life around here) but because I didn't like the bangle aspect. But I think it could solve your problem too :)

If you want I can pm you the people I used and send you pics of my bracelet :)

The Love bracelet or halo diamond rings aren't something that could ever be "too trendy". Halos are more popular recently but they are actually just gaining popularity again after many years and are really classic because they have been around forever and are found on a lot of vintage rings. The Love bracelet is the same thing, it has been around since the 70's and worn by celebs in the 70's. Every decade has celebrities that have worn the love bracelet and the fact that it is still popular shows how classic it really is. As others have mentioned, most people don't see that much of the Love bracelet in real life but certain areas like yours have more people that own it but in most areas it is rare to see. I know what you mean about the Tiffany heart bracelet but because of the price of the Love bracelet I don't think it would ever be nearly as accessible to as many people, particularly those in middle school.

I agree that the love bracelet is classic..it is a very nice piece of jewelry.
Also, I see your point about the implied lack of exclusiveness. ..
Really, it depends on where you live, I think. I see high school girls wearing them at my children's private school. My manicurist wears one. They are very popular around here.
If you love it I think you should get the bracelet and wear it with pride.
For me, am not attracted to them but primarily because it can't easily be taken off.

I would definitely consider this a classic not trendy. If you love it, get it.
I think it is a great bracelet, just not for me. I know I couldn't keep anything on 24/7.

Not to get into semantics, but classic and trendy are not mutually exclusive. Something that is classic can definitely be trendy from time to time, and things that are trendy may be classic or may become classic (or fall back into obscurity). But an item can definitely be both, given that the definition of trendy is very fashionable or very popular. Trendy isn't automatically a negative thing, it simply connotes something that is very popular at the moment.

I do think that jewelry can be too trendy, but not that piece. That piece to me screams timeless class. I think of 'trendy' as the past, present, future pendants, or the 'S' pendants, something along those lines.

Trendy & classic are two different things but sometimes their paths may cross.

May I show my age and use an example? In the 1980's tight-rolled jeans, ginormous shaker sweaters, & Converse All-Stars were all trendy. But the Converse All-Stars are classic. Get it? :p

LOVE bracelets = Converse All-Stars. (And I've NEVER seen one IRL. But I live in the terminally uncool Midwest.)
