If USD5K is your budget, there is a variety of watch makers' watches out there.

I wouldn't consider Hermes.

Brands which you might want to consider for under 5K:
1. Rolex - you can get Oyster Perpetual No Date
2. Omega - Aqua Terra or the more lady like Constellation
3. Jaeger Le-Coultre - Reverso in all steel or steel and leather strap
4. Chopard - Happy Sport round/square with leather strap

For another 1k + a bit, it looks like you could get a stainless/gold Tank Francaise. I have this watch and love it. You might actually be able to find an authorized jeweler that could give you a bit of a discount, as well.

I love the Jaeger le-coultre Reverso! Definitely would consider it!
I love the 33mm Omega Constellation, but feel it is too heavy on my wrist.
For Cartier gold watch, I just can't resist it. It would end up on my wrist some day!
Thank you for your knowledgeable suggestions!

If having a gold Cartier is something you've always wanted, in that case I'd personally up the budget and get a solid gold one. You'll be wearing this for many years, you don't want to have this "what if" or "should've" feeling sticking with you all the time.

This will probably be a very unpopular comment, but here goes. If I were going to spend a lot of money for a watch (and I have), I would buy a watch from a real watchmaker - Patek Phillipe, Rolex, Vacheron-Constantin, Breguet, etc. I think it is silly to spend so much for a "designer" watch that has no real intrinsic or resale value. Just one woman's opinion.
