Is anyone else fed up with all the talk of resale value?

I think the reason resale value talk annoys me is because I will never buy a used item unless it is dramatically cheaper than the new one. Plus, I just don’t get why anyone thinks they should not lose money when selling a used item.
When people say "retain value" I don't think most people expect to recoup everything they paid. I think they mean can they use it and then resell it and then get something decent back for it considering that the item is now used.

My bigger annoyance is those who buy an item and are afraid to use it. I know ladies who will scream if someone puts their Coach bag on the ground. For me, I feel like there’s not much that will ruin a bag. Maybe pen mark or scraping the side. My H SA thought I baby my bags, but I told her that yes...while I baby the bags in between use (in their original boxes on their side), I’m not afraid to use mine. I put bags on the ground and everything...because it’s not worth buying something if you are going to have constant anxiety. Whether it’s because you want to keep it nice or resell it, nothing is worth fretting over normal wear and tear.
What about those who have meltdowns at the thought of putting their bag on the floor in public restrooms. I don't think they consider the bacteria actually on their hands that they have picked up all day long and then touch their bags all day long.
My favourite read was about a tpfer complaining about the rudeness of fellow restaurant patrons when in a busy restaurant someone asked her for the emty chair at her table. She snapped, 'it's not spare, my bag is using it". She even admitted that there were no other spare chairs, but she was not putting her bag on the ground. Smh. Lol.
I digress... back to topic. Great thread, very interesting perspectives. As I have said before, "buy what you love... bags are not investments, portfolios are". I also think buying and selling is a necessary evil for some, me included, to discover what style really works.

I don't put my bag on the floor, especially in a public restroom. I also use seat covers in a public restroom and wash my hands. The idea of what would get on my bag from the floor grosses me out. I wouldn't touch the floor with my hands. In a restaurant, we usually sit in booths so I put my bag on the seat next to me. If we have to sit in chairs, I'll hang it on the back of the chair, use another chair, or put it on my lap (which makes it really hard to eat.)

Count me in the “would have a meltdown if I put my bag on the floor of anything particularly a bathroom” group. I do consider what I pick up on my hands during the day and won’t rouch railings, escalator handholds, etc. And, I also wipe down my phone and bag each day. Lol! I know I can’t avoid all germs but I’m trying.

One of my friends teased my germaphobe ways and said that I’d never survive the mutant plague because I didn’t get enough exposure to germs. I said Then my plan is working! I want to the the first to go when the mutant plague hits. Not interested in surviving with an extra set of toes growing out of my forehead.
:whut:

I had a beautiful Ferragamo Verve tote and it was stunning. I sold it NWT for pennies because resale was poor. It’s just the way it and I regret selling it - not because of what it fetched but because I didn’t realise what quality I had in my hands until was too late. I sincerely hope to buy another sometime.

Going OT to say I saw a GORGEOUS Ferragamo tote on theRealReal and while I was *thinking* about it, it sold right out from under me. I was crushed.

Don't get me wrong,, my home is my bubble, but out and about in public I move through a crowd steal faced tackling the germs like wonder woman haha.. when I get home... dump stuff, wash hands, shower. I baby me not my things though.

This thread really keeps me thinking:amuse:
I buy bags, wear them and never sell (as stated in my previous post).

First of all, I will only buy a bag after thinking what I'm using it for. It never comes to my mind that I'm turned between buying, using and selling. If I buy a bag with the intention to wear and sell, do I enjoy wearing it?

When wearing the bag;
So careful where to put the bag, always making sure it never gets scratches, etc.
Not getting wet (checking the weather before going out), no stains….using the umbrella more to cover the bag instead of covering my head lol
No darkening of the handles (careful not using harsh handlotions/sanitizers, sweaty hands)
Nervous when people will touch it
Get annoyed when pets climb over it (even if Sweety will only get near it....a no no)
DH's are instructed how to carry the bag...who knows he'll carry it and not knowingly rubs it against the wall (own experience )
Somebody's spilling drinks/food on your bag
and more....
Am I happy to wear the bag under these circumstances….so careful because of the resale value? OR I will never wear it, just on display, or just wearing it around the house to the garden and then back inside, standing in front of the mirror and that's it! That's what probably what I'll do if I buy a bag for the purpose of selling it for a profit.

I'm careful with my bags but bags won't dictate me how I wear them :P

I get you, I really do.

But if you go to the start of the thread you’ll see that it was designed as a place for those of us that are fed up with it to voice this. Hence the obvious title. We all did this with humour until some posters came on to object ... maybe the same type of people that stress about every perceived blemish their bag suffers.

Like you, I don't consider the resale value of bags when I buy. I don't have an unlimited budget, so this means I have to be careful about expensive purchases since I don't want to have to consider reselling (it sounds like a lot of effort!).

I do understand how you might be fatigued by the talk of resale value. But at the same time I don't think other posters came here to object. In your first post you'd asked "What are your thoughts", so it seems like this is a thread where we can all come to share our opinions.

From your first post, I didn't get the impression that thread was "designed as a place" for those fed up with resale talk to vent. I actually got the impression that this is a place where we can share a broad variety of opinions! :flowers:

I also wanted to say I enjoyed reading all the different opinions posted on this thread. The only thing I disagree with is the comment that one can't afford the bag if one has to consider resale value. It come across as sweeping, over-generalizing and also very elitist. I think different people take into account a multitude of factors when deciding on a purchase, and just because it doesn't align with one's purchasing practices, it doesn't necessarily render such people "unable to afford the bag".

Just my opinion, of course.

I would never put one of my bags (or anything other than the bottom of my shoes) on a public restroom floor unless I had intentions to never reuse the article. Sorry if TMI but just last week I nearly cut the circulation off in my left arm with a fully loaded 50 cm epi keepall while using a urinal in a very large airport because I did not want to place the bag on the floor nor did I want it banging into the urinal or "privacy" screen on either side of the urinal. This is for a bag I don't even like that much, just convenient to travel with. I don't worry about scratches or things like that, but I'm sorry - public restrooms + any accessory I plan to use again in the future is just not happening for me.
