Is a diamond heart too young for me?

Hi Ellenelle,

Welcome to the jewelry subforum! Personally, I am not fond of heart diamond. It does not appeal to me and it's my least favorite shape. Please don't throw tomatoes at me. IMO, heart shape is something that is "cutesy" in our teen phrase. I think for classic, elegant, and timeless pendant, i would pick round. It looks good on everyone and it has good spread. I find another nice shape that has nice table spread is pear. Whenever, i make a large purchase for jewelry, i ask myself two questions 1)Can i see myself wearing it when I am in my 60's? 2)If I don't want it later, can it be easily resell?.

You will hear all opinions, but ultimately, it's up to you. What make your heart sing?

Perhaps you could go try different pendant at various shapes.

Thank you for answering, I actually share lots of your reflections! But - I do like the heart shape, especially the symmetric shape that is not too big or arty. My problem is I don´t know if I would like to wear it, or if I would feel kind of silly. Or am I just afraid of the sweet and romantic style because I start to feel I am getting older?

I do like round shapes, I have a pendant I really love, it´s a loop in gold with the names of my four children. That would definite be a safe choice, but I don´t know if I can let go of the dream of the perfect heart shaped bling...

The best way to determine if something is right for you is to try it on. Imho, I think hearts work for all ages, but you need to decide what is best for you. In your honor today, I am wearing my Elsa Peretti 11mm Open Heart in Platinum and pave diamonds. Good luck on your decision and keep us updated.

The great Broadway actress and grande dame of the theatre Kitty Carlisle famously wore a diamond heart pendant for most of her life that was given to her by husband playwright Moss Hart. Today we would call it a signature piece. She never took it off except when on the stage, and wore it in all public appearances. Back in the 1950s and '60s when she did a lot of TV game shows she became known for the pendant and probably sold a lot of them as a consequence. Back in the day she was regarded as what we would consider today to be a trend-setting fashionista. Classic piece!
I must be old...I remember Kitty Carlisle's heart very well, she always wore it on To Tell the Truth. I wonder if she wore it because her married name was Hart?

Hello AS...the Peretti open heart is a classic!

I have a pave heart enhancer I wear on different chains and I'm no spring chicken!

Valentine day is not that far away and I am looking for a nice piece of jewelry. I have seen some nice open diamond hearts that looks classic and elegant, they are not too expensive either, about 1000-1500 USD. But - am I too old for this kind of pendant? I know I should go for what ever I want to, but what do you really think? Do you think a diamond heart pendant is too young looking for a woman in her forties? Or do you think it is a time- and ageless piece of jewelry?
I feel the same about some jewelery but you are still so young so I think you should get what you like.
I love hearts but to me or for me it depends on what it looks like. I like a certain size for myself, not something that looks like it's for a teenager.

Could be. She said she wore it in memory of her husband Moss Hart who'd been the love of her life and died young. It had been a gift from him. I thought she wore it because it really sparkled on black-and-white TV. ;) The pendant was stolen while she was walking down the street in New York. I think that was in the '80s or '90s. She was elderly by then and must have been an easy target. She said that prior to that she had worn it every day for over 40 years. She died a few years ago. She was one of those women like Betty White who remain zesty and active well into a great old age.

I am 51yo and have a Tiffany heart diamond necklace and I love it.

Thanks, Sue for the background. I believe she was 96/98 when she died...a nice long life and not that long ago. YouTube has several To Tell the Truth videos and Kitty always had a sly sense of humor. Also a Grande Dame of NYC society.

And, showing my age here, Elizabeth Montgomery wore a gorgeous diamond heart in almost every single episode of Bewitched.

It was a special piece her husband, William Asher (at the time), had given her. she must have been in her 30s then. It was not a cutesy heart, but a very elegant simple diamond one. I loved it!

Here's a bunch of photos of her wearing it:

And some info on it:

How interesting! The necklace was actually Austrian crystal made for Elizabeth Montgomery...one of 2. One was auctioned off in 2012.
Loved Elizabeth Montgomery!

It seems she lost the original one, which I am assuming was actual diamonds, so, she had two more in Austrian crystal made. I absolutely love that piece!
