OMG, this is huge. I think you should keep as it is, the setting is so classic, plus it has sentimental value for you and your in-law family. Otherwise pear diamond will look great as a pendant.

I would keep it as is and wear it on your middle finger or right hand.
or I like what another poster said about having the diamond removed from the setting and make it into a pendant if you would wear it often. you could always have it put back into the setting when you feel comfortable wearing it as a ring?

btw- it's gorgeous!!!!

I would def keep as is and have sized to fit, if it doesn't. I would wear it as a right hand ring. I was going to say if your husbands brother ever gets married I would ask my FIL if he wants him to have it but your FIL must think a lot of you if he wants you to have it. Enjoy it, it is truly beautiful!

You are lucky to receive something so beautiful and meaningful!! I would NEVER ALTER IT. I would keep it forever as is -- with the exception of sizing-- unless you divorce your husband, then return it. It can be worn on either hand and will look lovely, but as a right-hand ring it ROCKS!!!

I agree fullheartedly with what most people on here said, do not alter this ring, especially if this is an antique the value comes in part from the entire piece and resetting it would take away the integrity and some of the value not to mention the sentimental value. Also, it is very important to have this piece checked by a professional and verify the authenticity of the stone especially as this would be a very valuable jewel but it is crucial to have it verified that it indeed is a diamond. I would also resize it if you must, keep it and wear it for occassions if you find it too large. I think it looks great on you, not too big but of course you may feel it is too big if you are not used to wearing such a large stone. I too would wear it for occasions. Beautiful piece and fits your beautiful hand so well! Please keep us posted about it, what you find out and whether you have anything done to it.
