I bought an Issey Miyake bag on impulse today, and it is twice as expensive as most expensive bag to date! It's about US$1450, which I know isn't an astronomical amount (at least on this forum), but it's still a good sum of money.

I'm not in debt and I know I can afford it, but it's definitely not the wisest financial decision because I just bought another luxury bag in August. I've budgeted for a last luxury buy for this year, so this wasn't completely unplanned, but the purse I ended up purchasing was almost twice of what I had intended to spend.

The thing is, I absolutely LOVE the bag and it makes me so happy, but at the same time, I can't shake off the guilt of spending half of my monthly salary on a single frivolous item.

Anyone else share the same dilemma? How do you make peace with your eventual decision?

I usually sell items I'm no longer using to justify a new item in my wardrobe.

I know you probably feel very guilty over your purchase, but if you love it and you know you will use it, try to enjoy it and not feel bad over it. I know it is easier said than done, though, but if you aren't in debt and are wise with your money otherwise, see the purchase as something you will make good use out of.

What is done is done, you will soon forget about the price.
Issey Miyake bags are great. You love yours, that's all that matters.
Enjoy carrying her with pride!

Can we see a picture please? :)

I'm at my parents' for the weekend so I don't have the purse with me at the mo, so here's a stock picture first!

It's the Baobao Platinum Dewdrop in Gunmetal. Isn't it absolutely gorgeous? It also comes in blue and a champagne gold (below) which I deliberated over for HOURS before deciding that Gunmetal was a more classic colour I'd enjoy for years to come and coordinate with practically everything in my wardrobe, even though the gold is definitely more eye-catching. But there is a little part of me that regrets not getting the gold, which could be contributing to this guilt. Logically speaking though, I know I'd regret going with the gold MORE because it's a lot less subtle irl and so would be a huge challenge to wear.

And here's a close-up I took of the 'dew drops' (which is actually clear resin).

I know it's a lot of money for what's basically PVC and fabric, but this range of bags are really the ONLY range that I fully believe I'm paying not just for quality, but the amazing creativity behind it.

Wow, what a beauty! I hadn't seen this one before

I can see why you fell in love with her!

To help with the guilt, is there any bag you could sell (only if you don't use it!) from your collection? Or maybe hold off buying another bag for a while, and enjoying using this beauty? x

Yup I've sold a few lower end bags (Marc Jacobs, Rebecca Minkoff, Longchamp) which funds slightly over half of this bag, so it's not THAT bad a hit but it's just the figure that scares me a little. (I was initially planning to fund a Gucci Soho Disco with that money) It's 3-4 the price of their basic range and even twice that of their more expensive limited edition ones. Plus I've never actually plonked down so much on any bag before so it's also 'first-time' anxiety I guess.

And most definitely I'm going on a ban for the rest of this year and the absolutely earliest I'll allow myself another purchase would be March 2017, depending on how sizeable a bonus I receive from work. [emoji16]

I had the feeling of guilt when I bought my first designer bag. I think unless if you pay no mind to finances, there's always some questioning of non-necessities. To me, I break it down to do I love it and can I afford it. It sounds like it's yes to both for you.

That first bag of mine? I still have it after over a decade and love it. It's not a classic, practical bag either. It's neon pink and the bag to which I hold that love standard above when making a new purchase.

I have always admired the Baobao. It's really a bag lover's bag. Yours is gorgeous and the resin raindrops on it look so real! I do think the gunmetal is very wearable.

I had the same feeling as you when I bought my preowned Lady Dior this year but I figured with the prices going up every year, I might as well do it even if the bag is infrequently used. It's a bag that will never go out of style.

Even though most of us have a number of bags that we love, there are still very, very few bags that will make us swoon. You've found one of yours! So it's time for celebration, not guilt.

And personally, you also checked off my must have - you don't have debt and can afford it. If it was putting you into debt, delaying a bigger goal like a home or car or just putting you in a tight financial situation for a while I'd say return it. But it's not! So I'm thinking DEFINITE celebration!!!!! :happydance:

Enjoy your new baby! She's unique and quite striking. You'll love carrying her.

You're right, I should celebrate because never have I felt this way about a bag, silly as that may sound. It's the first time I've actually truly felt that a bag was a work of art, and not just something pretty but ultimately utilitarian.

I am thinking of 'saving' her for a while, to only use after my vacation in Nov-December so that I have something to look forward to when I return to work. But I don't know if I can wait that long, oh my!

I don't "save" my bags, especially not the really expensive ones. To me heavy use justifies the expense. If you spend $1500 on a bag and only use it a couple times a year then it will always have a high price tag per wear but if you use it often then the cost per use decreases. I won't feel so guilty about my purchase then because I feel I'm getting my money's worth.

So, let's review the facts;
- you had planned on making a luxury purchase
- you spent double the money you had budgeted BUT have sold a few pieces and funded over half the price of your purchase
- you went for a color that's very useful in your everyday life
- you love the bag.

I don't see a downside..? You can always sell something else if you have pieces that don't tickle your fancy anymore to fund the Disco.
Just enjoy your gorgeous bag and stop raining on your own parade! :yahoo:
