I'm the highest bidder on an item from japan....

It's nothing to do with Japan specifically. It is totally to do with your home country and how strictly they enforce customs and excise duty. There is nothing magical or special about how Japan Post treats mail or how sellers from Japan would choose to mark items. It is no different to buying an item from any other country.

For example, if you look up the US customs office, the limit for an item is $200. Anything above this and you are fair game for taxes, although it is rare for US buyers to be charged import duty/tax. If you are in Australia, those lucky individuals have up to AU$1,000 before they have to think about.

If you live in the UK, Europe or Canada, and your name starts with any letter of the alphabet between A and Z you can expect your Government mail to put their long bony fingers into your wallet for tax.

As for Japan Post EMS, I almost always use EMS whenever I post anything because it is fast, cheap and the tracking is excellent.

I'm waiting on an LV Portefeuille Anouchka MM purchased via eBay from a seller in Japan--it was shipped via EMS on 12/26. I'm crossing my fingers with you that I won't have to cough up extra for duties on top of the purchase price! :wondering
