I’m scared to bring my Chanel bag to Spain…advice please!

to add to the conversation: I've just been all over Italy and I feel like people online over-exaggerate the risks of carrying anything expensive there. I've seen many girls wear their Chanel classics, Gucci, Saint Laurent, Ferragamo, Hermes, a bright pink Birkin 35, Cartier jewelry and not once did I feel like they were in any sort of danger. I left my wedding ring and all my designer things in the US and felt stupid for doing so. As long as you have some street smarts you should be fine... Next time I'll take my things and wear them happily :)

Agree.

I’m in Rome now, and I see a lot of women in chanel CF, Hermes exotic , VCA pave, Bulgari, Cartier and other brands. In the center of the city, they seem to like a lot of bling plus four inch heels. They’re both local and tourists. The only thing that gives me pause is 1. More than once, we’ve seen a local couple and a tourist couple who have left their bags and valuables unattended at adjacent tables (one went to the bathroom and the other wandered off to look at the pastry case in the other room. Once, a tourist couple even left a large and expensive camera on their table unattended. DH joked that we must look very reliable and honest lol.

And, almost every local who wears their H kelly bags, has it wide OPEN (I don’t see that in NY, even in Hermes or on Madison Avenue. So, I kind of think that anyone who is a tiny bit cautious wearing their H or chanel will be miles ahead of those that are not.

I just don't get out careless people are. Imagine if someone grabbed your purse overseas? What a PITA that would be. Hopefully, they don't keep their passport in it.

+1 with @gbbeau And @Allisonfaye (solomeo is tomorrow ans I’m wearing a BC dress, BC jacket in case it’s windy) ! In Rome, the premier five star concierge of our hotel off of Piazza del Populo, who wears Bulgari. Rolex and diamonds, said she feels safe all over Italy (she sometimes gets off work at 1am). The exception to this seems to be Naples, where Italians have advised us that they don’t feel safe unless they are with someone familiar with Naples (DH and I were in Naples years ago, but have not been back there recently). In Tuscany, at Borgo San Felice, outside of Sienna, the guests are dressy in the evening, and there is Dior and chanel, dresses and high heels. In Siena, during the day, I saw tourists with chanel CFs, as well as tourists with backpacks and Birkenstock’s. I’ve felt as safe all over Italy as in NYC. JMO Of course, YMMV.

I’ve been excited for my work trip to Spain this week - BUT after doing research and hearing from ppl that have been there, I’m now totally reconsidering bringing anything of value. I wanted to bring my classic flap and some Chanel jewelry but everyone is saying to not “look expensive” or touristy. Has anyone had a bad or even good experience with this? Any advice please? I’m getting worried now!
I am Spanish from Barcelona. I wouldn't wear Chanel there if you don't know well the city, there are lot of pickpockets who will target you because of your bag. I left my country long time ago, my friends always tell me how unsafe the city is right now as some pickpockets gangs are using violence.
If you go to Barcelona try to use a no very flashy crossbody bag. Better to be safe than sorry!
If you go to another city, I have no idea then but I wish you a safe trip

Please don't bring any branded bags to Spain. I went to Barcelona in 2018 and my louis vuitton brea bag got stolen in the airport - 5 mins after we got out of the arrival gates. We were looking to buy sim cards - one minute my bag was on the trolley with my husband pushing it and the next minute it was gone.

When we went to the police station at the airport they said there was nothing they could do and it'll take a while to see the cctv so we never got to see who took it or how. Everything was gone - passports, money, cards. Thankfully my husband's bag wasn't taken too. Within 10mins of us doing a police report, 2 more people came and reported their whole rimowa cabin luggage got stolen and another - a chanel bag.

So yes, for your peace of mind just don't bring any flashy branded bags. We were aware of pickpockets in Las Ramblas and touristy places but who would've thought they'd be in airports too - it was our fault too that our guards were down then.

I am soooo sorry, horrible thing to have happened - anywhere.

In London, I saw lots of new students in Sept get their new bikes stolen immediately. Thieves have calendars too and know new students are going to to make a bee-line for cycle stores. So they wait outside these stores, follow them usually back to Halls and steal before they've even had a chance to test out the locks or invisible-mark their bikes.

What I mean is, airports in every country in the world are not just where travellers go.

My brother lived in Barcelona for a few years, he lived near Las Ramblas. I visited him a few times, usually off season. When we left his house in the evenings we NEVER took our phones with us! I didn't really enjoy Barcelona, I found the old city centre had a very 'unsafe' vibe (namely in the evenings/at night)

I definitely wouldn't recommend taking ANYTHING flashy with you (bags/clothing/watch/jewellery)

I have carried Saint Laurent with the large gold metal logo, Louis Vuitton, and Balenciaga in Barcelona. Thankfully all was ok, but yeah there were definitely some rough areas around Las Ramblas to the right of it near the clubs and bars where it was a bit sketchy walking around in the wee hours of the night. Even my sister-in-law who grew up in Hollywood felt a bit scared.

I just wanted to add, whether you decide yes or no is your call. If you do it, I strongly recommend city precautions (my usual): I almost always wear crossbody or somewhat closed, on the crook of the arm in FRONT of my body. (A 30B is not latched shut, but my items are secured on the bottom; topped with a scarf; and, turned logo towards my body. The bag does not leave my person nor dangle behind me. I don’t leave it on a tabletop; hanging onto the back of my chair; on top of my wheeled luggage; or (as my MIL, who is from Maine, does, on the FLOOR). In a restaurant, my FIL will sometimes place his bag on a sideboard or hook more than a few feet from our table. He says it’s still in his line of sight. That makes me crazy, but I cannot police other people Lol.

In a restaurant, it’s closed and placed either directly against my side in a chair with closed sides or (as per style, still crossbody) on my lap (napkin over). Occasionally, it will be between my back and the chair back, but only if no one can walk behind me. In posh restaurants where a bag chair is provided, i move the bag chair against my seat and a wall, or otherwise out of the way. I still have a mental debate as to whether an unobtrusive bag hook is a good idea or not. I haven’t succumbed, but if I did. The hook would be between me and DH assuming we are seated facing outwards so the body of the bag is concealed by a tablecloth And inaccessible to walkers by.

I should note that bc of these practices, and bc DH and I only travel with carry on luggage (even in a month long european trip), I prefer bags that are small and don’t take up much room (The Loewe mini puzzle or the men’s dior saddle — the latter zipped and snapped — are adjustable crossbody and can be smooshed flat or worn close to the body) have lived in NYC, or another urban center, for almost five decades, and I am 54, with no incidents, including pickpockets, knock wood. I take the same precautions wherever I am. Of course, everyone is different and YMMV

I wore my medium classic flap to Barcelona twice and San Sebastien once. No issues, but in any big city you need to be very mindful of your surroundings and scan the premises when you are walking. If you appear unaware, then you’ll be a prime target. Or carry a larger no-name tote, and put your smaller purse inside the tote for longer walks.

I wanted to update my answer since I have been staying in Barcelona for the past two weeks. The last couple times I was in Spain I was with my husband, but this time I am traveling alone.

I brought some Chanels here, but since neither of my purses are crossbody bags, I have not felt comfortable wearing them in the street and have left them in my luggage. I haven’t seen anybody walking around wearing an obviously Chanel or Louis Vuitton, etc. handbag.

While people are fashionable here, I’m getting a vibe that it would be in your best interest to not look flashy or expensive. I’ve had my Love bracelet peek out of my sweater and have caught a couple men just straight eyeing them. Wow, I felt so uncomfortable. I’ve lost count of locals warning me about pickpocketers and SAs urging me to take a taxi when I left the store with multiple shopping bags.

If I had to repack and insisted on designer, I would stick with a bumbag or a crossbody flipped around so no logos are showing. A Hermes Evelyn PM would be perfect here. I brought a no-name tote, and even a cheap tote is cumbersome because it is not safe to place your purse on the ground or behind/under your chair. I have to eat while holding my bag if I want to sit outdoors.

I love this post. IMO, in any city, if possible, I either pack my purchase in a nylon collapsible tote (I use a WF bag) or have packages delivered in unmarked bags (never give a room
Number as the concierge will deliver)

In any city, I would urge people to get into the habit of never placing a handbag on the ground, under a chair or away from your person.

I also wanted to more strongly recommend the Dior men’s saddle bc you can adjust it for wearing crossbody and it has no logo-Ed hardware. The Loewe mini puzzle has a flap over the zipper which makes me feel a little safer.
Both lie close enough to the body to wear under a jacket if you prefer

I wear a lot of designer bumbags and crossbodies or backpacks on my chest. I have traveled lots in the last 25 years with only one issue. I hate to admit that I was pickpocketed in Lisbon‘s old town when I was warned lots. I have been fine in Italy and Spain and Latin/South American and South East Asian countries were there were heavy crime/petty theft warnings.

Evelyn PM is one of my travel bags as well.

I think it depends if you plan to use public transportation or not. When I travel alone, I use the subway, train, bus etc, so I am hyper aware and only carry Longchamp with zipper (I place the zipper towards the front). Carrying a handbag with zipper or closure is very important. Thieves have so much opportunities to rob people in a crowded space, including museums.
