Hi!

it's me again, the tpf-member who has mainly Swarovski in her treasure box :-)

I try to figure out, which tw would look best on my ears, I don't want to upgrade every 2 or 3 years. I know that studs tend to become bigger over the years. I am around 40. I like the size of these hearts and would go for round diamonds. What do you think, what would be the two round diamonds, similar to the size of these hearts? More than 1.2 carat tw?

I did my best to show you as much as I can, including a ruler (in cm, not inches!)

I planned on buying 0.5/0.6 tw first, but I feel that I could wear bigger stones, even when taking into consideration that I wear them mostly at work, since I spend most if my evenings on my couch or running in the streets. :D
It's a nice size for everyday, no?!

TYIA!

PS: don't you agree - the brightness of Swarovski crystals is amazing. the photo was taken with the webcam, no flash.

That's a 5mm Heart right? That's going to be so much harder to guess because we don't know the depth. If it were round it would be a half carat, give or take. A heart is about the same assuming it's not bottom heavy.

Hi ame! thank you for taking a look. Are you talking about 1 carat total weight?
I thought they would be much bigger. Smaller would be good!

I'm wearing my 1.42 tctw studs and I took one off and measured for you! It measure 0.6 of a cm. So it's just over 1/2 a cm. I have a thread on here with my reveal if you want to see pictures... I think I have bigger ear lobes... :-)

Thank you, neverenoughbags! That's so kind!
I will check out the reveal-thread for sure!!

It is true, my ear lobes aren't that big, so I could go with smaller stones. It's the small: Any small meal seems larger when served on a small plate. :graucho:

It shouldn't be offensive if you plan on buying them. Also helps the process because he can get you what you want faster with less guess work.

And I would guess the same thing, .8-1 ctw which is my favorite everyday size.

My 0.7 cttw diamond studs look slightly smaller than yours.

Can you try on different pairs in real life? Then you'd know for sure, and take out the hearts vs rounds conversion factor.

DEFINITELY NOT offensive or weird to ask! That's why they're there!
These looks larger than .5 crts each to me though. I realize the lobes are smallish, but I'd still guess more like .75 at least.

As a former jewelery salesperson, I would not find it (asking a jeweler to help determine the diamond ct equivalent) offensive, but would be quite annoyed if the person did it, got all the information, and then went somewhere else to purchase and/or set the stones.

All jewelers and most -good- jewelry salespeople could use a mm gauge to figure out the approximate carat size. Approximate, because carat is weight, not dimensions.

If the jeweler has loose stones, or a good variety of diamond studs, it's as easy as holding them up against each other and comparing!

PS: Hearts usually end up being cut small as they are often very deep...but even taken into consideration more ideal proportions, your heart stud still looks much larger than typical half carat stones...I'd agree more on the .75s (so 1.50 ctw).

So I went back to the store, with my Swarovski studs.
They equaled 1ctw, maybe 1.2ctw.

I got used to the larger size, having have worn the glass studs for a couple of days. Originally I had a pair with 0.5tcw on my wish list. I wanted to check whether 0.5tcw would not be too small ... I mean we all grow older and our ear lobes will never stop growing.

The SA handed me over a pair - me thinking they were 0.5tcw I had tried last time - and I thought to myself "well, they dont seem small at all!"

But and the original pair which I had in focus was already sold. The pair he handed over where more than the double price: 8680 EUR
They were 0.66ctw, buuuuuut/aaaaand: VVS1 and colour E!

The smaller pair had been VS1 with colour G., for half the price.

One week ago, the 0.66 seemed way to big on my ears. Like me being 20 years too young. Today they seemed right. So yes, the shrinkage factor sets in quickly.
The 1ctw I tried they seemed to be out of my age-range.

So I had the lovely studs in my ears but the VVS1 / colour E pair in 0.66tcw is totally out of my pricerange.

And this is what I did: I told the SA that I finally had decided on the size: 0.66 it is, no smaller.

But: VS1 is absolutely fine for my for my ears, I also prefer a lower colour, G or even H in trade of a lower price. He said there is no pair with lower quality available in that size but he will check and get back to me.

I am glad I had the support of the forum to save thousands of $ when going for lower clarity and lower colour. Not too low of course! But a VVS1 and E for studs is definitely super nice and lovely but just no must.

It seems as if Tiffany's prefers to offer larger stones (starting above 0.5ctw) in higher qualities and the smaller ones (0.2tcw-0.5tcw) in lower quality.

Oh yes, and not to forget: The appearance of the cheap glass studs is amazing, they did not look bad at all compared witht he real stones.17 EUR. :graucho:

I would say you could safely drop even more in color and clarity. Personally I could go as low as K/SI2 for earrings as long as the stones are ideal or close to ideal in cut. You're going to pay a large premium at a B&M store and have limited selection. I would suggest checking out pricescope.com for more information about diamond buying and some great sources/tools. You might want to buy from somewhere with a good upgrade policy so that you can size up in the future.
