I have a pretty diamond, slightly larger than a carat, that I inherited and I’m open to suggestions on what to do with it. I wear my own engagement ring/WB on my left hand and a Cartier trinity on my right, so I’m not looking for another ring. I’m thinking about making it into a simple necklace - like a Tiffany Peretti Diamonds by the Yard, with the single stone. I’d love to hear anyone’s suggestions and, better yet, see some photos of your transformed diamonds. TIA

I’ve done this with a three carat diamond (not the best cut) that was originally a ring belonging to my mom. Any local jeweler should be able to do it. This was done when I only wore dainty wg or platinum. Nowadays, the trend is to mix metals and stones, so you could even mix your Diamond with peridot, amethyst, blue topaz etc and set in yg or RG. Tiffany’s, Verdura-belperron and other jewelry houses mix different gemstones together.
Pls excuse the lint and the crappy reflective picture :D

@Lillianlm, thanks for your kind words below. As per request, I added a side view for you. Chain is attached on two sides (probably similar to @Gourmetgal below) but it doesn’t go through the back. It remains centered and it never twists or flips. HTH

It’s beautiful! I’d love to see a side photo of the setting if you have a chance. I’d like the diamond to stay centered (a problem with the Tiffany DBTY) so I think I’d like the chain to go through the back of the setting.

I have a 2 ct on a simple chain set in a martini setting so all you see is the diamond...the chain is attached to the setting on both sides. The setting is white gold the chain is 18k yellow gold so the diamond really pops. I get so many complements. When the stone is sizable you don’t really need a bezel or halo.

I’d love to see a photo when you get a chance. I like the idea of a white gold setting and a YG chain. I have a 5 stone DBTY in platinum, as well as the Tiffany Picasso X (kiss) necklace in platinum, so it probably makes sense to shake it up color wise.

What about turn it into 2 ct diamond studs (aka buy a matching 1 ct stone plus setting)?

I’m probably in a minority here, but I have never felt comfortable wearing real diamond studs. I would NEVER buy knockoff handbags or wear fake/ knockoff jewelry on my hands or around my neck but my diamond studs have been for years (like 30+ years) CZ set in 14k gold. What can I say???

Why, are you concerned about loss or theft? I couldn't blame you but man I LOVE diamond studs! 2 ct studs would be a dream. You could buy a lab grown diamond to reduce the risk a bit. I only have 1 ct studs now but it's on my list to upsize one day and I will probably do lab grown... I DO lose earrings enough to ever chance it with a super pricey mined diamond pair!

How about a pendant with a halo of 1pt, 1.5pt stones? My friend did this and the sparkle is amazing, quitE a bit more than just the single stone itself.

If you are going for simplicity, I think a martini setting on a chain would be lovely.

Best wishes with your choice; hope you’ll come back and show us!

It’s a combination of fear of loss and the thought that, with my shoulder length, curly hair, my ear is not showcased enough to warrant real stones. But it certainly is an option and I will give it more thought. All my CZ studs have been 1 ct each, so I agree that it is the perfect size.

Out of interest have you tried on natural diamonds in your ears? 2ctw stud earrings would feel amazing and with screws they are hard to lose if you attend to the screwbacks regularly.
I have also been sceptical about the worth of buying real diamonds for ear studs (seem a lot of money for something a little ‘boring’??).
However a trip to the jewellery store to try on a pair of the real deal quickly changed that. They just looked different to my eyes or perhaps what I mean is they felt different. Now, ‘proper’ diamond studs are on the top of my very long want list!
For days when a more detailed earring design is just too much for me :)
And of course there are jacket/enhancer options to keep things interesting. Look great with pearl dangles. :)

I wear a .85ct custom sliding bezel necklace as my everyday necklace. It was made by David Klass Jewelry in LA, who are very reputable and reasonably priced. Mine is 18” long with stations at 16” and 17”, which helps with layering or changing up the look. By itself for everyday I usually wear it at 16” and for more formal looks, I tend wear it at 18”. It does a good job of staying centered and not flipping. I researched extensively on fixed vs. sliding bezel and found that the general consensus is sliding stays centered better than fixed. Good luck with your project!

Famous style icons have mixed real and fake and it was a point of pride. I don’t see an issue with it. I have a few rings in my stable of engagement p/wedding types mainly bc Id lose them (once DH threw a wedding sapphire out with the newspapers). But I’ve never lost or misplaced the one faux, a travel eternity band, that I ordered from Amazon for the purpose of seeing whether I minded a full eternity setting in between and under my finger.

I love your setting and the idea of having ‘stations’ at 16” and 17” is brilliant! Could you please post a photo of the clasp and the stations? Thank you!
