Maybe pick your top five varying in price within the total budget and let him pick? That way no one is disappointed and you still get surprised with something you like.

My husband and I did that. He gave me a budget and I gave him my Tiffany picks. He chose the HardWear ball earrings and necklace. I was surprised he chose two things and not just one (we are on a budget and I wanted to be sensible but he chose to splurge)!
