Do you know the scene from Up, when the dog is in a middle of a conversation (clearly, I speak of an animated movie) and all of a sudden his attention and talking halts and is redirected as he yells "Squirrel"? That is me when I see someone wearing a bag that I know something about. I was in a cafe last month working on a manuscript, when I looked up and saw a young women carrying the cutest xxs Balenciaga shopper bag. I immediately stopped what I was doing and went over to talk about her bag, how I had tried it on in an XS in grey, how I liked the size she was wearing, etc., etc.
Sounds familiar .

I refer to that very scene from UP more than I would like to admit... mostly because I find describing myself that way most of the time. :D

Don't miss the guy part. Males approaching female strangers unbidden is not exactly the same, no matter if about bags or shoes or anything else. I'm fine with you or others not agreeing, of course.
While I agree that care should be taken when approaching strangers, I don't think that a man complimenting a handbag should automatically be considered suspect. There's quite a difference in delivery, as someone said before me. If a such a man is knowledgeable about handbags in general, why would anyone assume he had an ulterior motive? After all, "I love Bottega Veneta's Intrecciato designs" isn't quite the same as (and please pardon me here) "Hey, nice set of 'bags', heh-heh-heh".

I think Brett and I would be pals.
