It's like I can't turn it off. No matter who I'm dealing with or where I'm at, I'm always on alert as to what kind of handbag someone is using, whether it be out shopping, at church, on the train. Last week I had lunch downtown with someone visiting from Chicago (I covet their Magnificent Mile) and it didn't take long before I asked about her Coach bag which led to a very lengthy conversation and more eye-rolling from the people that have already been down this well traveled road with me.

Today at work I got an email from someone and the thought of "I wonder what kind of bag she uses" just randomly popped into my head.

Is anybody else always thinking bags? Always noticing them on others? Always wanting to talk shop? Has anyone gone up to a stranger and inquired on where he or she got their bag? I haven't done that yet but I am not ruling it out!

Ah my dear. You are in the right place among kindred spirits. Don’t you know that a handbag is a reflection of our soul?

We all love bags and can get quite "obsessed" with them at times. But if you think this borders on true obsession (aka this is taking over your life and becoming the subject of every conversation), perhaps you should speak with a professional. Nothing wrong with checking in with a mental health professional once in a while!

Yeah, gents approaching strangers about their bags is a bad look. "Obsession" is fun if it just means your personal enthusiasm and eagerness to share a hobby with folks of like mind. Beyond that, boundary issues.

Not sure I agree, I've approached women before about their bags, can't see why a guy carrying a quality bag can't do the same. I don't make it a long conversation mind you, it's usually a compliment or a quick question.

Don't miss the guy part. Males approaching female strangers unbidden is not exactly the same, no matter if about bags or shoes or anything else. I'm fine with you or others not agreeing, of course.

Don't miss the part where I said he was carrying a quality bag . I don't have a problem with an unfamiliar man approaching me with a comment or question, surely that's not an issue? I'm assuming the OP isn't approaching women in the dead of night in back allies asking about their handbags. Maybe it's geographical? It isn't an issue here in Canada IMHO.

Delivery is everything to me!
A friendly guy not creepin’ in my personal space to compliment my bag would be welcomed
You can usually tell very quickly whether or not the guy has a genuine interest (and some knowledge!) or if he's a creep. If he's a creep take any action you wish, I'm all for calling creeps out in public.

I can't say that I am personally obsessed with bags, but I have accumulated a lot of knowledge about bags via osmosis over the past decade and a half. I always get a good chuckle when complimenting a woman's bag and she gazes at me pleasantly surprise, wondering how in the f*** I know what it is...
I love it when that happens, although it's rare I must admit. The reality is that most people have their heads buried in their iPhones and are oblivious to the bags walking past them...

Ain't that the truth... you rarely encounter spontaneous conversations anymore in public places because most people aren't perma-connected to their phones. Shame, really.

Funny, when I find a like-minded person come up to me with a comment we usually end up not being able to talk fast enough because we've found a kindred soul. All the bag info we know in under 5 minutes...GO!

Do you know the scene from Up, when the dog is in a middle of a conversation (clearly, I speak of an animated movie) and all of a sudden his attention and talking halts and is redirected as he yells "Squirrel"? That is me when I see someone wearing a bag that I know something about. I was in a cafe last month working on a manuscript, when I looked up and saw a young women carrying the cutest xxs Balenciaga shopper bag. I immediately stopped what I was doing and went over to talk about her bag, how I had tried it on in an XS in grey, how I liked the size she was wearing, etc., etc.
