Smoky Quartz is not an expensive stone. I bet you can pick up a nice matched pair on ebay or loose stone website and have them set for much less than the Ippolita pair.

^ITA. Also, check places like TJ Maxx, Marshalls, etc. I got a beautiful pair of smokey topaz studs from them for $40 a few years ago. If you don't like the setting you could always have them re-done if you find a stone that is what you're looking for.
Overpriced or not, I love the Ippolita pair. I love how bold, yet classy and elegant they are.
The JR one's are lovely too. Totally different look. I actually saw some pretty JR Smoky Quartz dangle earrings at Nordstrom Rack last night. I think they were around $260?
