I personally would go to a local jewelry store that you like that is non branded. I think your money will go further, unless you really want a designer item. I would just wait and see what grabbed my eye...

I only buy jewelery from my local mom and pop jewelry shop. They are fantastic ppl, they always give good prices, they repair for free, and know their diamonds! I think designer jewelry is overrated and overpriced. I like to support the smaller businesses.

As for what the OP can do with 500$, it depends on what she already has. If she is just started, I can only suggest pearl studs, or hoop earrings.
IMHO she can just get a very nice set of silver jewelry and have them platinum plated. Swarovski also is a very nice affordable idea. http://www.swarovski.com/Web_GR/en/01/category/Jewellery.html

I also like Swarovski. That's where I bought all of my wedding jewelry. It's some nice bling without the hefty price tag.

I recently tried on the Helios Desert Glow Ring in the store. My husband said it was nicer than anything at Tiffany. Unfortunately they don't make a size 5, so I'd have to wear a ring guard with it. You can get a lot for your money, as most earrings range from $50-$75, bracelets $100-$130, rings $120-$260, and necklaces $95-$500.

I would also see if there's a Nordstrom Rack near you, because they often sell Swarovski pieces at discounted prices.
