Tauketula, you CANNOT have greens without smoked something or greasy meat LOL!!! I told my mom that we have to stop cooking them that way because we are getting older and eating healthy is the way to go and she looked like she wanted to SLAP me into next week!! It took me forever to get her to stop using fatback/jowl bacon. She drew the line at smoked turkey wings LOL!! Her greens are to die for, literally-

Lol. I'm from the south so that is how my mom always made them. I've switched to smoke turkey but my mom still uses fatback!!!! 😀

She says she's gonna die regardless, might as well eat good food before she goes ten toes up LOL!! She keeps me laughing and she never has a bad day! She told us when she dies to put all of her tjmaxx/marshall receipts in her casket!! Make it rain! And I better not dress her in those ugly funeral home outfits either, she wants to wear her skinny jeans, and keep the old hag across the street from them away from my father! She is hilarious! My hubby thinks she should have been a comedian, she's a retired teacher who still hears from her kids and now they have kids of their own. Everybody loves her. She is the kindest person with a good heart.

Sounds like a great lady. My husband and his family ( 7 sisters and a brother!) are all from the south. Nicest family I ever knew. All very close and down to earth. They just tell it like it is! Your Mom is funny about keeping that old hag across the street away from your Dad! lol! That cracked me up and so do you, baglady. You are quite humorous on here! Happy New Year to you!

It may be an oil stain. A lot of people/ restaurants add oil to greens. Even smoked meats which would produce oils. So, yes, the baking soda may help........ :)
I did suggest the baking soda but after thinking about it, I have only used it on interiors. It does work great on the linings, but I have never put it on leather. Hoping it won't scratch it or take some of the color out of the leather. Not sure, only used it on the linings. That is why taking it to the shoe maker might be the best bet. They are professionals and will know best.

I did go to the shoe place first, but they were closing right as I parked. I'll have to try again tomorrow. Thankfully the stain has faded substantially, but I'd still like to restore it to original if they can!

With regards to making the greens "healthy" - I use vinegar for flavor, but I would never, ever leave out the bacon + grease :graucho:

Speaking of that, how would you make cornbread without the "good" stuff? I wouldn't know where to start!

You can't, might as well eat styrofoam. Have you ever had cornbread cooked healthy? It's awful!! It's superdry and guaranteed to produce a choking fit and some idiot family member pounding you on the back (WRONG) LOL! Some things we should just stick to the way it ALWAYS was. If you don't eat it on a daily basis, we should just go with what we know. Fat and grease occasionally will not kill us. We only do heavy mac n cheese on holidays now, YUM!! My Mom has drawn a line in the sand on how and when to use fatback and grease LOL!! She will not give up flavor too.
