I got a Valentino bag...thinking it was Valentino Garavani. Nope.

Brands copy each other all the time
Well, yes, but actually no. :) Saint Laurent College bag may look somewhat similar to Chanel Flap, and Hermes Bolide looks like LV Alma, Balenciaga Ville and Prada something, that's basically brands getting inspired by one another and following current trends. But what Mario Valentino is doing is on another level.

I saw saksoff5th carried some Moschino bags & wallets too, really cute and leathers were really good too, didn't buy though, these brands just don't hold value, too bad
and Balenciaga's city, Fendis, Gucci, etc
And Proenzas do? The PS1 that's in your avatar is stunning, don't get me wrong. Love that bag to bits. Their resale value is nothing to write home about though.

Sorry for going off topic. Just found it curious.

I didn't pay attention to Proenzas, have seen Rack carried it several times. Actually I don't own the PS1 or any of Proenzas, put one there just so others don't know what bags I have, hahahahaha

I’m sorry that happened to you. I saw the bags at round a couple years ago and asked the same questions in this thread. It will give you background on the brand and a little on how it’s perceived.

Candidly, I’d be fuming in your place. It’s possible the shop didn’t know the difference. But methinks they did since they priced a used bag at the new bag prices. At minimum they had to do a google search to properly price the bag. I would talk to them and see what can be done.

Mario Valentino actually came to existence before Valentino Garavani. They both have coexisted without problems until recently when Mario Valentino started to copy Valentino Garavani's bags. But since Mario Valentino came first, Valentino Garavani can't trademark the name Valentino, that's why for accessories Valentino Garavani always have the word Garavani on their branding, but use the name Valentino for their Ready to Wear and Haute Couture. Mario Valentino is not a luxury brand in my opinion.

Somebody compared Mario Valentino to Teddy Blake and that is quite accurate. They do greatly inspired by bags made out of pvc and the prices are accordingly. In Europe the bags sell for € 50 - € 150.

If you liked the bag enough to buy it, and you didn't pay Valentino Garavani prices, I say chalk it up to a learning experience and enjoy the bag as much as you can. Sure, it sucks that it wasn't what you expected, but the store didn't misrepresent the bag, IMO.
Live and learn.

Actually, they had a co-existence agreement that both could use the Valentino name. There were items in the agreement about the logos and all of Mario Valentino bags must say that they are produced by 'Mario Valentino' (they can not just say produced by Valentino). Mario Valentino did used to be a luxury brand back in the 50-80s. Mario Valentino was originally more of a luxury shoe man and then branched out into bags/clothing in the 60s-70s. He had several well-known designers work for him at one point or another including Karl Lagerfeld, Giorgio Armani, and Gianni Versace. However, Mario died in the early 90s and his brand basically died with him. About 7 years ago, Yarch Capital bought the Mario Valentino name and started producing bags again. However, the quality is no where near what the quality was back during it's heyday. I truly believe that they were hoping people would think they were receiving a Valentino Garavani bag. Mario Valentino is most likely rolling in his grave over what Yarch Capital has done to his brand.

I do agree with you that it was a luxury brand but now it is not anymore. They could've done what German Aigner sms MCM did.

Ugh. I just purchased my first Valentino bag from a luxury consignment store. The bag was locked in the case with a channel and Louis Vuitton bag. I assumed it was Valentino Garavani and bought it. But IT’S NOT. It’s flipping Valentino by Mario Valentino?! I had never even heard of that brand before. The store doesn’t take returns and I don’t really want it anymore since it wasn’t what I thought I was originally buying. I looked up the resale value and it’s not great. Question is, does anyone know about Mario Valentino? Is that a high end brand? I couldn’t find much info about him expect for he died.

Yes, my reaction was the same when I bought a bag thinking it was Valentino Garavani... Actually this year I saw few influencers (Leonie Hanne) which worked with them for an ad.
