I am going to start saving for a birkin, need every tip and help I can get!

Actually I think the Birkin is more square than a HAC, but either way--it's just different!

I don't know the exact price difference between chevre and togo but if I recall correctly it's a few hundred dollars, US. There's also a thread or two around here on Birkin pricing, which is really useful. If you use the Search button (along the top up there ^^^) and search on "Birkin Price" or something, you should find several resources.

If there was a positive karma button option, I would give you loads!! You are SO helpfull!! (there is a positive karma button on another site I visit)

Hi again
I was in the madison ave store talking with claude the other day and I thought I would mention part of our conversation as it may help you.
I asked him about the weight of the different leathers and durability issues and he said that chevre was the lightest and most durable-only issue is sizing, as someone else mentioned, because a goat is small, they do not make large sizes in goat. that being said, i am sure you can find a 30 cm or smaller. As far as price, I did not ask but I have to say, I would pay a few hundred extra for a lighter, durable bag! Good luck and happy hermes hunting!

You are amazing!! how sweet are you to think of this!!!! Even though I havent deeply investigated my future hermes birkin for so long, chevre is my favorite at the moment. I love how the leather sounds to be iricedent (spelling?). I am definitly reconsidering the 35 size, maybe the 30 will be big enough.

Mai Britt, we're in the same boat! I'm so glad that you started this thread (I wanted to, but I'm shy :wondering).

I am on the road of saving for my first Birkin and this forum has helped me A LOT to understand more about Hermes (I want to be articulated when I walk in to Hermes one day, LOL).

I'm thinking about Togo or stiffer leathers (just my preferences) in 30cm (I'm 160cm, or if I get the conversion right, 5'3"). I've tried on a friend's 30cm Birkin, and the size feels right for me. I love how the colors shines in Box Calf. But.. while it's definitely TDF, I'm not sure if it will suit my lifestyle (I'm scared I'd ruin the leather with scratches)

Speaking of Chevre... Are there any striking differences between Coromandel and Mysore (aside from the veining?), e.g, the weight or stiffness?

Good luck to you, Mai Britt! (I'm wishing luck for me too :sweatdrop:)

I am 162 cm so we are almost the same height!! I am a US 6 or 8 and a european size 38/40, if you are about the same size, can you PM me some pics of you holding you friends bag?? that would help me a lot figuring out which size I should go for.

I can't really answer the chevre question, I am sure there are some on the board who can answer this!

I agree on the box leather, it is amazing, but i think my lifestyle which includes a dog in my car every day, next to my bag, I would be too scared for my Birkin. Maybe on a Kelly 28 in many years it would be amazing!

Good luck to you too! I cant wait untill you one day unveil your Birkin!

LOL, you are so cute with the positive karma button! (I've seen those before on other forums so I know what you're talking about ;))

Creme.Brulee (cute name), to me, the primary difference between Chevre de Coromandel and Chevre Mysore *is* the spine. That being said, there are some new chevre leathers coming out in spring-summer 2008 (which means they will hopefully hit the stores in July-August of next year), and they may be replacing Coromandel and/or Mysore. I am not 100% clear on this, though--maybe someone else here can give more insight? I have seen small swatches of the new chevres and they were lovely--but I don't know which ones will come in which colors and for that matter sometimes they bring out an amazing leather and decide to only do small accessories in it. Auuugh!

That all aside, I personally have a soft spot for Chevre de Coromandel. I don't know why, exactly, but I just LOVE it. I love the spine, it's very unusual and almost has an exotic feel to it--not in the way a croc bag is exotic, I mean, but "exotic" as an adjective.

It does sound like you BOTH are definitely well on your way to becoming very fluent Hermes-speakers, so keep up the great work!!! This is part of the fun of Hermes--learning all the variations and subtleties of the myriad different options!

Mai Britt, wow, we are in the same size! I'm size 6 US. Unfortunately, my friend doesn't live in the area, or else, I would bug her, borrow her bag for 30 seconds and take pics for you. I'll keep it in mind though. If I meet her again, I'll grab my digicam.

CynthiaNYC, thank you for your info! (and for your comment on my nickname, LOL). I agree with you, there's something "exotic" about the spine on coromandel that I can't explain. Thanks so much for the encouragement, Cynthia! Newbies like me need it, LOL! It seems this forum has new bits about Hermes every day, and I love learning about it.

thank you creme.brulee!! I am allmost certain I want coromandel (if it is possible to get off course), because I want texture in the bag. but also after seeing so many Birkins, especially in the Asian ladies & Birkins (which is THE thread  ) I think I am back to wanting a 35. this is what I typically bring with me in a bag:

medium sized agenda
medium sized wallet
cosmetic pouch
a magazine or a book
cell phone

so maybe the chevre is off again .. maybe togo is the way to go afterall? or evergrain as someone mentioned ..

Hello my dear!
LOL @ the Karma...I've often missed it here on TPF.
I've found it amazingly helpful to go to the store and try on the different sizes. If you have a chance to get to one, by all means do go and model them in the mirror.
Also, I know you're a big LV fan- do you prefer the Speedy 30 or 35? The Birkins taper more towards the top, but width-wise they are the same of course as the Speedies. So you can get an idea of sizing that way.
Personally, after flipping through the leather book, I changed my whole idea of what I wanted so if you can do that also I'd highly recommend it. I had originally wanted Swift or Box but got concerned about upkeep- then I'd wanted CDC but it was just a bit too shiny for me personally on a bigger bag. So I settled on Mysore with Clemence as the 2nd choice, though I know it's heavy and will likely not want it for that reason.
Do you like a bit of casual slouchiness or do you want a structured look? The chevre leathers are just so wonderful but Clemence will slouch so nicely over time.
Do you have a colour picked out? That's the hardest part ;)!

Thanks Stylefly!!! Virtual karma for you too!!!

I know black - absolutely!! And gold hardware (is that hard to get when ordering?). I also know I want texture, I think box is too hard an upkeep for me and I will get soo sad when it gets its first scratches. If possible I would love a bit of sheen, if that is even an option with textured leather.

I don't want it to be too slouchy. but not insanely stiff either. On a scale of 1 to 10 where 1 is the soooft slouchy leather and 10 is stiiiiff leather that creaks, I am on a 7. I like the look of batwings when the bags is years old and broken into.. am I impossible???

Thank you all for your wonderfull advice!! Before I started posting/reading on the Hermes subforum I thought there was ONE basic leather and then the exotics.. ahh how young and foolish I was! LOL

Coromandel has an amazing sheen to it. The colour looks sooo rich too and it's about a 6-7 on the slouchy scale. I think that might be your best bet!
So black with gold, eh? Very classic choice...I love it. I went through a similar agonizing voyage a few months ago when I wanted to pick out my first Birkin, the ladies here were so lovely and helpful:heart:. And I didn't even know what colour I wanted so that made it harder! I even changed the colour a few weeks later and now I feel content. But it's just so much fun to research and ponder! Happy hunting!

Mai Britt, I'm 5'2 and wear a size 2. My first Kelly was a Raisin Bi-color Epsom 35cm. I looked like I was dragging a briefcase and it was heavy. After a few years of experimenting, I find that I suit a Kelly 28 best or smaller. I'm a huge fan of chevre. It's light, durable, relatively water resistant and smells divine. Colors seem to come alive in chevre. I also like fjord, clemence and togo.

After reading what you're planning to carry inside a Kelly, I'd suggest you try a Kelly 32 or 28 Retourne. Both sizes fit a lot and it's perfect for your petite size. Correct me if I'm wrong but 32cm Kellys are more readily available.
