Randomguy why don't you bring your fiancee to Tiffanys when they have received their 5best rings so she can decide which cut/ style she prefers? It's a lot of money to be paying without her input.

Because I am planning on surprising her (read my first post)..........that is a good idea, but would kinda ruin the surprise aspect........If she hates it, she can return it (exchange it?) ......I asked the salesperson and she said they actually get a lot of E-rings returned......mostly from dudes that ask....because it is their last-ditch effort to get someone to "take them back" after screwing up........us guys are usually a pretty dumb species.

RandomGuy I very much enjoyed reading your posts. I'm sure she will love it. Who wouldn't like Tiffany? :p Good luck! Hope you can show us hand pictures when you've popped the question (she will say yes!)

best of luck! since you already know the pros and cons of buying at tiffany's, i won't bother going there. the ribbon ring is what you are talking about for the ring that extra bling around the center stone - u can do a search here since there have been threads about them. it's specifically made for smaller diamonds, but it will cost more than a solitaire setting (plain). you can choose white gold over platinum to save additional $, although i hear that metal prices these days are insane no matter which you choose.

the thing i would be careful of during your blind test is the quality of the stones. tiffany's tends to stock a lot of really high clarity stones - VVS1 and VVS2, which is really unnecessary unless u want that quality. you will pay a lot more for a VVS than a VS or a SI 1. i can't remember if their lowest grade is VS2 or SI1, but i would personally aim to be there since it will maximize the stone size for you. they also have a lot of high color stones. if u really want to maximize the size of your diamond without compromising on any other noticeable differences, i would have asked for stones in their lowest color and clarity ratings since tiffanys has a cut off for them - they dont have any "bad" stones, so u can't go wrong! good luck and i hope your find something you love :)

thought i'd just add a link to a recent posting of a ribbon ring on a finger...

Congrats on your progress, OP!

As a woman who wants a Tiffany engagement ring, myself, I cannot fathom any reason she will not be thrilled with her ring. No matter what size or design you choose, it will be one stunning ring. I have NEVER seen a ring from Tiffany that I thought was a rip-off and I've never heard of anyone not be completely happy with their engagement ring from there. I think they have the most beautiful settings, all of the fine details are so fluid and perfect. You can just TELL it is a Tiffany ring.

Great job randomdude!!! I am sure she will love it. My bf bought me a bracelet from tiffany's and man on man did the E-ring section SHINE when we went in to look at bracelets!!! It looked as if every e-ring there was a little piece of perfection no matter what the size. So I think it's safe to say no matter what you picked out for her it will be a stunning piece of jewelry. Plus its from tiffany & co!!!!

I am thinking about jamesallen.com saw a setting i liked....nice stones, and spent some time reading everything on this site http://www.truthaboutdiamonds.com/ looks like online is a much better way to go, I am very glad I posted this on there. Thank you all for the advice. I'll let you know as this progresses.

My ring is James Allen and I couldn't be happier. Good luck with your engagement!

Congrats on the decision... I don't think you can go wrong with your gut!!

My ex-boyfriend (when proposing to his current wife) took one of her rings and put it on a taper candle when she was sleeping so he could tell her ring size. Pretty good idea to find the perfect ring size...

I will suggest this: if you go with tiffany, go with the simple classic 6 prong or legacy setting. A lot of people love the ribbon ring but I think it is awful, so I would go with the simplest thing you can and if she really wants something fancier, then exchange it, or you can have the stone reset in something more elaborate later on. Unless you're SURE she'd like something like the ribbon setting, $5k is a big gamble to make.

Oh I was not aware they had a return/ exchange policy with E-rings. In that case, go for it! Surprise her! :yahoo:

Friday I went to talk to her Dad........he said YES!!......eavesdropping Mom (haha.....nah, I am just kinda loud when nervous...) said she was happy too!!!!
They promised to keep a secret................then started planning a wedding......and probably naming babies and stuff? Just kidding...I am excited...
I'll let all of you know what happens with the ring..
Thanks again

Can't wait for another update! I think it's awesome that you asked her folks. My husband asked my dad and brother, my dad said "that is wonderful" my brother said "why are you asking me? I really don't care! but while I have you, this means you're getting her the heck out of this house within the next two years right? If so, by all means marry her".

Neither told my mom or sister, because both are loudmouths (it's genetic!)
