This is an interesting topic. I am a stay at home mom. I should probably go back to work cause my daughter is older now. Hard to get back after 8 years being home.
I see alot of forums on here of people buying this type of jewelry like its nothing. I was wondering if you all work, or is everyone wealthy. I have to say even if I did work, not sure how my husband would feel if I was spending money on diamondswhen we could save it for other stuff down the road. I guess spending 500 or 1000 here or there, but most big fine jewelry purchases are thousands.
I hear ya! I agree, with working hard, sometimes it is nice to treat yourself. I am sure there are many that are very wealthy, or who knows, maybe in debt. Everything within reason is the way to go. The one great thing with fine jewelry is that it does last! So probably better to save for a bigger piece than spend tons on cheaper fashion jewelry that will ruin in a few years. When I see people post photos of Cartier Love bracelet stacks I start wondering about my own finances! It depends so much on each person's circumstances. For example, I have $$$ student loans to pay off, but it's my only debt, I'm single/no kids, and I'm generally living frugally so that I can afford a 10-year repayment plan. I feel that it's reasonable to spend 1 to 2k per year on big discretionary purchases in my situation, even though I do know that if I were as responsible as possible, I'd put everything towards paying off my loans.
Last year I really scrimped and bought myself something really glitzy (for me, at least!), but I've vowed to be more conservative from now on. This year, I hope to buy a simple, everyday gold pendant and 1.5 tcw moissanite studs. Over the next few years, I hope to buy a nice pearl necklace for formal occasions and a gold bracelet that doesn't break the bank. I love looking forward to buying things I really want, and I'm trying to stick to jewelry that I would get a ton of use out of.
I think saving for big-ticket items is agonizing if what you really want is way out of budget, though. There are some things so luxe that it would be objectively foolish to buy them unless one makes $$$$$!
Totally agree with you. With my income and liabilities, the items that I dream of will take minimum 5 years of savings. That is if I don't get distracted in between. In my head after a bad month of work I crave and maybe spend that saved amount for a little treat. So my dream item may remain a dream only. This is an interesting topic. I am a stay at home mom. Further I have a doubt that in case I end up saving that amount I will hesitate to spend it on jewelry. Maybe travel yes.
Yep. For awhile I had a big obsession with beads, for ex. Pandora, Trollbeads etc..It was like a hobby....I am learning now that a couple of beaded bracelets is fine, and would rather save the money for a nicer piece of jewelry, like David Yurman etc.I try not to pay attention to anything I'm dead certain I could never afford T_T;; My problem has been spending $$ on hobby stuff, then losing interest in the hobby! I figure that jewelry has some inherent value, at least, and that if I choose carefully I'll be less likely to regret the purchase in later years.
I think another thing to consider is whether the big thing you plan to save for will really satisfy you or just feed an unsatisfiable hunger.
Good luck on your journey! I also saved up some coins to have a pair of moissanite studs made as well as a pendant. Great minds think alike! When I see people post photos of Cartier Love bracelet stacks I start wondering about my own finances! It depends so much on each person's circumstances. Joseybird, I have as of now also decided to get 1.5cttw moissy studs. But in my country there's only one authorized seller for the C&C moissanite and they are charging almost double for the F1 variety as compared to the forever brilliant variety. My ring and eternity band are both the forever brilliant type. Is the F1 so much better to command the higher price? Thanks, you too!Now that I have one piece of diamond jewelry, I don't mind settling for moissanite for future purchases. (Although I'll likely go for the variety that looks most like diamond, which I *think* is the Forever One variety.)

Btw, this year on my wishlist is the moissy studs and a 14k bangle bracelet. Well either those two pieces or a gorgeous Ruby and Diamond ring which I have fallen in love with, but it will be sort of a statement piece and not suitable for daily use.
In this thread first post is a picture of my FB rings with my diamond studs, it will give you an idea.Ooo I was thinking F1 because I've heard of the odd tinge of "regular" moissanite. But if FB looks just like diamond to the naked eye, I'd go for that instead.
