At an antiques fair in London, a woman behind a stand said "I know how much your bag cost". I said "Great, I'm trying to forget so don't tell me".
I was shocked when in Costco one day when a lady in back of me in line said my husband would never allow me to waste my money on such a frivolous purse like a Louis Vuitton. It took a few seconds before I blurted out well thank goodness my husband doesn’t feel that way.

If the question is coming from a friend and I know it's out of genuine interest, I'll be honest (or ballpark it).
I don't think I've ever had a stranger ask but I have had people I know asking (in a targeted way) - I just smile and say it was a price I was comfortable with. I don't engage further.
