I think this is a tacky question. Money is personal. I think it is more appropriate to share purchased items than discuss the amount of money spent.

I'm a malaysian, have lived/worked in Singapore, HK and now Aust/HK for the past 10 years. Most of us do not ask such questions. Tacky is the right word.
It could also be age related, a lot of young people (that makes me sound ancient) would see no offence or problem with the topic and wonder what the big issue is !
I'll just add my twopenneth and say that in polite society a person simply doesn't talk about how much money they spend, it's seen a vulgar.

It's 2012, times have changed, people speak more candidly about it. What is inappropriate to me or you isn't always to someone else, KWIM? It's not illegal, and it doesn't break our rules.
