How much is too much for a bag

We also use eagle creek packing cubes (I swear by these). I purchased my FUL bags at Sams Club for about 50 dollars each- they retail for much more. I also have a Tumi carryon (which is meh- not worth the money) and samsonite under the seat in front of you suitcase (bought it for my kids) and it packs a lot in a small space and has lots of organized pockets. I actually like it better than the tumi bag and it was a bargain at $120 (compared to the tumi which was $400 seven years ago).

I also have a “tumi just in case duffle bag” that I bring with me when I travel. It’s a large soft light tote that fits an amazing amount! I also always pack my purse inside this duffle in the airport. 10 years ago I put my speedy through the X-ray machine but I got held up with going through the walk away (someone ahead of me was moving slow). I stressed about my bag waiting for me out in the open. It was still there, but I prefer to not worry about my bags when I travel.

The more incognito you can be with traveling with your bags/luggage, the better you are.

Have Kipling luggage - love it, it is lightweight, durable and I don’t care if it gets scratched.
Maybe will get a suitcase from Rimowa‘s Salsa air collection someday - just have to rule out wether I want to spend the money for luggage or keep the nylon ones and go on a short trip instead. As for now I opt for the trip.
I guess LV or any other designer luggage is nice when you have a private jet. Bad for checking in because it will get scratched.

There is no rule for how much you should be paying. To each their own - I have several bags with price tags that would ruin the day for many. My luggage is quite the opposite because it gets beaten up, rained on, tossed around, tortured in the cargo space of planes etc etc.
I also don't want my luggage to mark me as a target. That's why designer will never be an option. Unless I win the jackpot and can afford to travel with a security team and hire a jet.

My current check luggage is Samsonite X-lite and carry-on by Benetton - wanting to update the latter to Rimowa Salsa or Bossanova. If you want quality that is superior combined with smart solutions and good looks, I'd recommend either style. Bossanova is the more luxurious line. And the prices are within reason compared to LV. Aaand you don't have to worry about scuffing, scratches, stuff that happens when traveling.

So many good points made here!

LOVE packing cubes! I have one from Snugpak and a few from Stadium and they make packing (and keeping organised) a breeze.

Good to know that even Tumi can go wrong. I always thought of them as a brand that gets it right every time.

One rule I was taught at an early age is, that you should put your bag on the conveyor only when it's your turn to walk through the metal detector gate. That way you don't have to let your eyes off your bag.

I need options, not all my travelling is the same. I have a Hermes travel bag I take on the train (I have wardrobes both ends so it's just a 'overnighter' size). I have DvF luggage set I take on planes to certain places (I don't think they still sell it, but like DvF bags, it wasn't expensive by designer standards). The smaller can be a carry-on easily. My huge LV suitcase stays at home even though it's on wheels. When I traveled literally around the World, country to country, state to state, hotel to hotel, sometimes day after day I used a seemingly indestructible German luggage set that my MIL gave me. It all depends on how you travel, most business travellers take a carry on and that's it.

If you will have nice, civilised business trips when/where people will be meet you as you're arriving/leaving/o your way, your travel bag will become part of your style and in many places a certain look still carries weight (no pun intended). LV still make great travel bags, I can hang suits or dresses in mine and it has a shoe compartment. As for money, I think people should pay for what's a priority. Quality is often a priority for me so in the words of my father 'buy once, so by the best'.

Have you watch the baggage handlers load and offload a plane? Also note that sometimes they are not just unloading passengers’ luggage? That cargo hold houses other things than just luggage. Everything is always thrown ( I would too if I dealt with luggage all day, it looks heavy). I’d rather buy luggage that can keep my stuff somewhat protected from all the rough handling. Unless you have a private jet I guess

I travel without designer luggage. It is not a requirement to stay in 5 star hotels. And gives freedom to ride buses/trains without drawing attention.

However, I own some pricey handbags. All bought new.
These do not travel with me. Again, avoiding hassles.

Sure, there's budgeting, saving, priorities, blah-blah-blah.
Any financial whiz on youtube(hehehe--oh, the humor) can preach in videos, then sell you a dumb book.
But we all understand these basics.

My rule = do not spend enough to worry about using the bag.
If it falls onto subway tracks, drops from a bridge, is scratched or slashed--I can go buy another one & say, "f*** it, let the sucker go."
Why crowd up my routine with more stress? Over every little grease stain or stranger accidentally brushing bag on street?

Buy only what you can afford to lose.
No more.
Then launch into the world confidently.

Best wishes.
While this definitely means that in order to follow your advice I have to buy a preloved Chanel, I'm totally fine with that. It's not worth the stress. And stress affects every other aspect of your life.

Personally I would not buy expensive designer luggage if you are flying (unless its private). Because luggage can get lost and stolen especially if it's been checked in. Nothing worse than waiting at the baggage claim watching everyone else pick up their bag and yours is no where to be seen!
