How much duty did you have to pay for buying a ring in the US back to Canada?

You could. But do you want to risk getting caught? Its not like a sweater you can pretend you forgot to declare. You get caught, and that is big time fraud.

That and its a FEDERAL OFFENSE and ILLEGAL

True. I just don't know how they would know, that's my point. I have a new Tiffany's wedding rings and I sure as hell am not going to check them when traveling to Florida if I bring them down, and I won't be checking them on the way back either... I just highly doubt anyone would look at a WEDDING BAND (wasn't that the OP question?) and GRILL you on whether you just bought it. Any necklace I bring down or back up again I'm wearing... and I don't usually travel with all Canadian receipts from all of my jewelry... KWIM? I mean if it's that obvious (if you're buying 5 pieces) I wouldn't do it, or risk it... I just think you could pretty easily wear one ring home and not get grilled about it (especially if it's something you could get in Canada) but that's just me. I think the border guards have more on their minds right now than a ring to worry about. Go ahead and flame me! Just an opinion.

HAHA, no one will flame you :)

I was thinking about an engagement ring. And as I am sure that the customs officials don't check everyone's rings, someone from Cartier told me that they do. I have zero knowledge about jewelery and how it's checked/looked at in the airport, so I thought that her suggestion that you could be criminally charged there and then was a little extreme. That's why I wanted to make sure I know what happens there before I buy.

I thought about mailing back the box and the receipt as well; my boyfriend even thought about mailing them back separately in two envelops (LOL) but I guess the Cartier salesperson sort of shot down both ideas =P
