How do you *you* decide if/when it's time to get rid of a bag?

When it gets pretty much worn out and looks beaten. I had to give away a much loved Burberry nylon tote this half of the year. I hate to have to dump it but it really does not look fit to go out with me anywhere.

I guess when I can't see myself using the bag anymore, it's time to let go. I'm struggling with this with my gucci boston, I have another bag that serves the exact same purpose so I never get to use her. It's hard to part though :panic:

My criteria varies only slightly from all the excellent posts this far. Age. Not the age of the bag, but my age. I know many people believe that particular criteria shouldn't come into it. But it has for me. Having had both an aunt and an older sister who refused to acknowledge the passage of time, I have long had the horrors of "mutton dressed as lamb." There are many beautiful bags for any number of ages and circumstances. But there are only a rare few that can transition all generations and lifestyles. So, when a bag makes me feel in any way self conscious, I know it's time to part ways.

I base my decisions to sell mostly on how much I love the bag, followed by how hard it would be to find again if I happened to want it back. I don't worry too much about a bag not getting much use for two reasons. One, because some of them don't work for me day to day, but are perfect when I do have the chance to use them. Two, because I enjoy having a large variety of things to choose from. I decide to sell a bag when I consistently find myself passing over it when picking one for the day, and am not excited at the thought of wearing it; I feel like a kid in a candy store when browsing my collection, and if one of the options doesn't ever pique my interest anymore, it goes.

My office building had that charity drive I had mentioned earlier in this thread, last week, and I gave a LAMB that I hadn't used for about three years (too similar to my LV and I'd rather use the LV) and a Coach that I only used a handful of times when I first got it four years ago (the one I mentioned in my earlier post). I'm sure a couple of people entering the workforce will be thrilled (especially the one that gets a virtually brand-new leather Coach!)

What a nice thing to do:)

Getting rid of a bag is allways a tough question...:shucks: I just put on sell one of my vintage alligators and it still puzzles me why to sell it, allthough I never use any of them beauties, but they really are collectibles.
I dont feel there is a reason why I should give up any of my premiere bags, I like them all too much, even that there are few I havent worn once this year. Its a sort of bliss to forget that you own something and then suddenly find it again, its way more cheaper than buing a new bag and the thrill is there!

For me, it's about lifestyle. Certain bags that I used to love and are beautiful, no longer fit the way I dress and my daily routine. For example I ve got a beautiful seasonal CHANEL shoulder bag, but I no longer carry shoulder bags due to an injury...

For me it depends on how much I am using the bag. If I am no longer using it I will give it away or sell it. I collect bags but I don't collect them just to look at them. I want to use them and get my money's worth. :smile1:

For me, it's pretty simple. When I don't LOVE the bag or can't justify its presence in my closet anymore, it's time to go.
Last spring I moved in with the DBF and let go of around 70% of my bags; things I've bought ages ago, things that I haven't used, things that just don't fit my style anymore. The way I look at, wear and buy things is a lot different than what it was, say, 5 yrs ago. I now look for great deals, timeless designs and high quality. I make investments and make sure the things I buy will have a spot in my wardrobe for years to come.
