How do you feel about settling for a Chanel Flap Alternative?

yes true to all that. and The Kelly has way too many dupes in the contemporary world so bet you found your Kelly without paying the crazy ammount and I bet you are very happy with it.

Yes! It’s a vintage Ferragamo gancini flap bag and it’s actually better functionally than a Kelly. And it was like less than 5% the price of Hermes....I can literally do an entire Mediterranean cruise holiday with the savings!

this is great I’m all about saving if what you love is not the brand per se but a style of bag from a specific brand.

my lust bag was the Chanel flap here and I did get my dupe which makes me extremely happy.

In my case my surroundings were also a thing. I wanted to be a chanel girl and that bag would worked with all my outfits. I was young, lived with my parents in the middle of nowhere, the bag was € 2.000 and I didn't bought it. If I bought the bag, it wouldn't be my only bag but it would scratch an itch.

Couple of years later and I can say I don't live in the best neighbourhood. If I would own the bag, I would be afraid to wear it. At best people would think it's a fake, at worst I would make myself a target.

If I had bought the bag back then, it would be a bag I own. But I didn't bought the bag and even if I would find a great deal pre-loved, I can't unsee the current price and everything that comes along with it.

I agree with everybody else who mentioned the reasons behind the bag are most important. Are you buying the bag because you like the style, the brand or the image.

I was once in a Saks store in their Channel kiosk. They had the closet opened and all the bags were tossed in there. Seeing them stored like that and looking at all the stock strewn together turned me off on the brand forever. I then realized how much of what we buy is set up for show. it is all a matter of salesmanship - or mostly anyway. Not that I don’t like pricey bags.

I agree with both sides. If you really and truly want the Chanel bag, have done your research, the pros outweigh the cons for you, and there's absolutely nothing about it you hate, get the Chanel. You'll just waste your money by spending it on the alternative that you really don't even want.

If you really just want the Chanel for the look of it, and it isn't something you really and truly want, go for the cheaper alternative. You'll be spending $6000 on something you're not totally in love with.

I'm currently debating on whether or not I want a Chanel boy flap, or want to go for a Rebecca Minkoff flap bag. I like the look of both. However, I've never owned any kind of flap bag as I've always preferred bags with zippers. I feel like my things are more secure that way. I would hate to spend $6000 on a bag only to find out I don't feel like my things are secure in that bag or that the flap annoys me.

I'm also wondering if I want a Chanel bag only because of the name. That's something I really have to think long and hard about. Do I want a Chanel because I really and truly like Chanel, or am I being influenced? I really don't know, but will refrain from buying a Chanel bag until I figure that out.

I've learned to never settle. Even if I'm that shallow that I want a Chanel because it's Chanel.
I'm doing it with a Hermes now. I just won't be satisfied.
this is the purse forum; you’re in good company

@slytheringirl, IMO get the RM Bag first. If that satisfies you, then you will have saved a ton of money. Only buy premier if you are positive nothing else will do. But, you may not end up articulating a reason and that’s okay. The heart wants what it wants

I bought the RM bag and figured out that I will never be a one bag girl. Instead of going over and under for a cf or boy, I am content with multiple colors of my contemporary premier designer bags.

If it is the Love you want to try, I never lost anything with that bag. Whenever I feel like my bag is going to be tossed around (also something you won't do with a Chanel) I use a small pouch for my even smaller things.

If you try out the Love, at least it won't be such a costly mistake. Or you can try out an inexpensive pre-loved or high street flap bag, maybe even borrow one from a friend.

The reason why I don't go for alternatives, dupes, fakes, etc. is because although they give you a similar look, they don't give you the same feeling.

Someone said this in a Talking Watches video that I watched recently about Rolex and fakes. You can fake the watch, but you can't fake how wearing a Rolex makes you feel. I totally agree with that sentiment.

A few days ago i was watching a YouTuber who was talking about how she stopped buying Chanel due do the price increase however she said if you really love the classic flap don’t settle for a similar Alternative even if it’s going into the same high end circle.

she said if you want the flap better save for it than going for the Lou Lou from YSL or the Dior version of that bag.

so I’d like to ask you just out of curiosity what do you think about this?

personally I disagree with the Youtuber I’m all about setling for an alternative even going with contemporary brands. you can get the Chanel flap look for less spending the ridiculous amount of 6,000 dls on the classic chanel bag one you can get the Gucci Marmont for 2,000 or the YSL envelope.

so im more in favor of setling for less expensive bag of that style.

I think word choice is important.

Buying an alternative is very different than settling. If you feel like you're settling, then the bag doesn't bring you happiness. So, it's a waste.

But, if you're just buying an alternative because you think the price/quality trade-off for Chanel is no longer worth it, then I think it's a great purchase. You're being smart with your money and will feel proud of the bag you purchase.

I agree with that sentiment but I do feel there is a huge difference between an alternative, dupe and a fake. Imo you can't compare those.

thats true, its really not settling when your choice makes you happy. It’s just realizing the price is not worth it.

The reality is that no one will really know if a certain bag works for them until they actually 'use' it.
Prior to owning anything Chanel, I thought that the classic was my HG. When I finally got the jumbo, I absolutely disliked using it. The styles that I liked but didn't actually love, such as the reissue WOC and Cerf tote - worked for me better, and I got a lot of mileage from them. I think most people buy Chanel thinking it's a workhorse type of bag due to the price point. It's not. It's still subject to wear and tear just like any bag you use, and the more often you use it, the more it shows its age (unless you really baby it).

I don't believe owning an alternative comparable bag is necessarily settling. It's actually a great way to know if the more expensive version is the right one for you. For the longest time, I wanted to own a Kelly. I got a generic dupe years ago and carried it around the house for a day. Needless to say, I'm glad that I didn't get one because if I did, that would have been another costly mistake.

However my opinion is this: if you use the next closest thing and love it for whatever reason, the size, the style, etc. then you'd still covet the one you originally wanted.

I want to give this post 1000 likes!

It’s so true - sometimes one can love the way a bag looks in photos, plan how it will work with their wardrobe, and even love it in person, but until you wear that thing every day and in different situations, it is hard to know what bugs you and what truly works for you.

For this reason, for certain bags, I try to find a similar style at a much lower price point and try that first. Sometimes I have found that this scratches the itch for the more expensive bag entirely. And then in other cases something about the style drives me nuts and I’m cured for that reason.
