Yes, but a pawn shop will take Chanel jewelry - and as lovely as it is, that isn't fine jewelry.

But it's not on the world market like gold or silver. You can look up the cash value of gold or silver anywhere in the world. Maybe that's the key for defining "fine"?

Good point, some one I knew when I first came to this country kept their good jewellery in a pawn shop and redeemed it when she occasionally wanted to wear it. Didn't feel comfortable with her roomies and their friends.[/QUOTE

It seems the definition of "fine jewelry" is based on what you own (or sell, as the case may be).

I have a very simple, very personal, way of defining "fine jewelry": a precious metal that doesn't cause me to break out in hives. For now that's 18 k gold and above.
