I've been thinking about Hermes brand awareness and how it's seemed to explode over the last 4 or 5 years, which got me wondering, how and when did everyone hear about Hermes? Did you have a relative that introduced you? A friend? Social media? How long were you aware of Hermes before you started shopping there?

For me, I remember googling something along the lines of "the best handbag in the world" and then fell down an internet rabbithole in the late 2000s. I wouldn't end up shopping in the store until years later.

Looking forward to hearing about everyone's experiences!

I was reading a magazine in the waiting room of my doctor in 2007 or was it 2008. Suddenly I saw this cool yet elegant black shiny trapezoid shaped bag carried by a model. The next day I started searching a boutique from 'that brand' called Hermès. Maybe a couple of weeks later I went to that boutique witch was 1.5 hours traveling. Outside I was thinking cr*p it's a very chic shop! Exhaled and went in. Did some browsing and fancied a gorgeous scarve. I remember the silver chain d'ancre bracelet around the wrist of the male sa when he was wrapping on my scarf. And I also saw him sizing me up, feeling very intimidated, but I didn't fling. Gave him a big smile/grin. Bye my next visit I asked him for a Kelly. He sold me an ebene chevre retourne with PH. That thing was heavy though.

I learned about Hermes by watching Sex and the City, when Samantha uses Lucy Liu’s name to try to get a Birkin. I didn’t really start looking into the brand until a few years ago when I finally had funds to buy some luxury accessories. Now I have a Herbag and a Bastia and they’re great. Not sure if I’ll end up getting more Hermes stuff, though. It’s very nice but I need to prioritize my luxury spending and for the foreseeable future it’s mostly going to jewelry.

I remember as a child my mother pointing out the Hermès store and saying it was very expensive. When I first lived overseas as a young lawyer (in Hong Kong) I became more attuned to luxury labels because (a) I started to have the means to afford them and (b) it was HK so luxury labels were everywhere. But as I’ve told the story on another thread somewhere, it was the sight of an ostrich B in Blue Jean at Harvey Nichols in London (where I was living by then) that got me hooked. This would have been the late 90s. Until then I’d always thought a bag like that was a strictly “dressy” option, but the woman at the juice bar was carrying hers very casually with a white t and jeans (and the most gorgeous aquamarine necklace) - it transformed the way I saw the brand.

As a child, I used to accompany my mom to Hermes. She would go every holiday/gift giving occasion to purchase ties for my dad. When my sister got married in the early 80's she did this for my bother in law, too. Finally, when I got married in 1990, my husband became the recipient of these beautiful ties. I didn't buy from our store until 2006. That is when i bought my first item: a patterned bangle. This started my own obsession with the brand.

Mine was going into the Bond St store with my mother when I was a teenager (mid-late 70's ) for her to buy perfume and just enjoy the glamour and luxury of the store.
I owe my education in Luxury brands to my mother who when I reached my teens liked to take me to Bond St and Burlington Arcade and ogle the goods on display.(I was obsessed with Saint Laurent at that time and felt Hermes was for 'old ladies' like my mum who was only about 45years old )
It was a great education because I've never felt intimidated going into any luxury store anywhere ever!
