Thanks for all the help! I am in love with the idea of barenia and vache natural. I would be thrilled to have an item change with use and I'm not put off by the marks and imperfections I would add to the item.

However the handle tears are killer if they're going to get worse. I don't think I could live without a briefcase if it took a few months to repair!

Well you know what works for you.but they should be fine for quite a long time before needing fixed IMO, maybe years. And then when fixed you could expect a generation or two of performance from this bag if cared for with regular cleaning and conditioning.:smile1:

Reporting back:

Not sure it absorbed that much of the stain - it looks better, but still looks blotchy and a bit faded. But these pics are in direct light - if she's not in direct light she looks great - pretty perfect. The second pic is in indirect light (the lighter spot in the center is just sheen, not discoloration)

What do you think? Should I do the whole bag and see how she looks? I hate to redye unless I absolutely have to.
Thanks so much for being so generous with your time, doc - I appreciate it so very much.

Wow, what an awesome job you did! Looks like you can go ahead and use this same polish or move on to neutral polish for the rest of the bag. Super duper job again!:woohoo:

Thank you!!! You gave me the confidence! I did the whole bag with a coat of the Lincoln Stain wax and buffed til my arm almost fell out...and wow! Here she is!

What do you think? Thank you so much for your amazing guidance - I'm thrilled with the results.

So now should I leave her as is or do a coat of neutral? Thank you again so very much - you are awesome!:hugs:

*sorry about the the sideways pictures...not sure why they uploaded this way?

Hello everyone!

I am new to the Hermès world and just recently purchased an Evelyne in clemence leather. I was wondering if I should treat the leather with any water/stain repellent. If so, which brand should I use? I've used Saphir Medaille Dor, Apple Garde and Meltonian on my shoes. I like the Saphir line but im not sure if its meant to be used on handbags as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated:smile1:

Gorgeous! Polishing and buffing well is quite a job is it not ? But well worth the effort!
Stay as you are now; no need for additional neutral polish.
She looks amazing! You get an A+

Not everyone likes to do this but I feel a a good polish or conditioner can help protect bags from misshaps..sometimes just that little bit of extra on the leather can make stains and mishaps easier to sort out, not always but often this is true. What color is your bag? Oh and yes Saphir is a great brand, the key is always to test a small hidden area and wait 24hrs to make sure you are going to liek the results before doing large visable areas. OK?

Thank you, dear doctor! It's all thanks to you. Thank you again for your wonderful expertise! You rock!! I will be back as soon as I can drum up another project- it's just so satisfying and rewarding, and therapeutic, to do this kind of work. Maybe I can get a job at the local cobbler's shop...:) I swear, I actually LOVE buffing. Had to control myself and stop!

Thank you so much for the response! My bag is ultraviolet. The stain repellent from Saphir is apparently 'safe' for all colors. I've had excellent results with the stain repellent spray so I think I will give it a try on a small hidden area like you said:smile1: Thanks again!!!

I'd work for free! I'd be in heaven- I find this endlessly fascinating and rewarding - one part chemistry, one part medicine, one part beautiful craftsmanship and quality... It would be like The Sorcerer's Apprentice, only with handbags.:smile1:

Oh! I had a kernel of interesting information to share: yesterday I was poking around in the Hermes store - I went to bring in a wallet that needs restitching on the flap (they estimated 3-4 months, sending it to NY, so I didn't leave it). Anyway, I had a chèvre Birkin with me that had two small white adhesive-like marks on it that I hadn't noticed, like teeny bits of chewing gum. I showed it to the SA who deals with repairs, and she said, "Oh, I can get those out, let me take it to the back." So, indeed, she disappeared into the back and came back with, presto, the marks gone. I asked how she did it and she said she took a hairdryer and lightly heated the gum and it just dissolved. Not to recommend this to anyone, doc, but I just thought it was interesting!

Hi there,
Yes so true you are correct there is part science, skill, artistry and a big heap of love that goes into fine luxury leather restoration and upkeep. You are well on your way to mastering some of it. Bring on another project when you are ready.

Those small white adhesive marks that responded to heat ; sounds like they were some waxy product or wax based build up which would infact work with some heating,if it were gum it would have moved deeper into the leather's pores and made more of a mark.

Dear Docride,

May I ask if there is anything I can do for my ostrich and croc birkins (matte and shiny) to prevent them from drying out? Thanks in advance for your help.

You can keep them away from heat sources and direct sunlight or light streaming though windows for long periods of time. Each of the skins are quite different. Ostirch can be cleaned & conditioned when needed even at home care should be taken not to use high oil containing products as you will have streaky and blotchy results including darkening, shiney crocodile takes special care best handled by Hermes or trusted leatehr care specialist.
