i am also surprised it needed work done after only 18months. i am even more surprised that they charged you! i would think that for the price of the item that the would cover any needed work caused by manufacturing for at least 2 years. which is now long LV covers their bags.
I can't speak to whether it's a common problem or not, but the wear on my birkin's handles was very noticible and my SA said, don't wait too much longer for this. I'm guessing that most, if not all, of the cost was for the refurbishment, but it's hard for me to say because this is my only H bag and I don't know what this normally costs. I was thrilled with the repair as well as the time it took, and didn't mind the cost, just to have it fixed and back!
$125 would be the cost for just the general spa----not the rewaxing, it looks as though they did that at no cost to you.
